Patna Women’s College, Autonomous, organized an insightful one-day workshop under the aegis of the Vigyan Club, titled “Novel Materials: Structure, Characterization, and Uses,” on November 22, 2024. The event was held at the B.J. Sullivan Hall and saw active participation from Semester V and I students of all science departments.
The workshop began on an auspicious note with a prayer song that set a serene and contemplative atmosphere.
Session I
The event commenced with a welcome address and introduction of the theme by Dr. Shobha Srivastava, Dean of the Faculty of Science, Patna Women’s College. She emphasized the significance of advanced materials in scientific research and their applications across disciplines.
The keynote address on the topic “Uses and Characterization of Materials” was delivered by Prof. Seema Sharma, PG Head, Department of Physics, Patliputra University. Her comprehensive presentation shed light on the diverse applications of novel materials and the importance of their structural and chemical characterization in scientific and industrial fields.
Session II
The second session featured a special address by Prof. Louisa Reissig from the Department of Physics, Freie University, Berlin, Germany. Her talk, titled “Borrowing Nature’s Materials and Strategies in the Design of Future Photodetectors,” provided the audience with fascinating insights into biomimicry and its role in advancing photonic technologies.
Session III
The workshop concluded with a hands-on training session on XRD data acquisition and analysis using ORIGIN software, conducted collaboratively by Prof. Louisa Reissig and Prof. Seema Sharma. This interactive session provided students with practical exposure to modern tools for material characterization, further igniting their curiosity and enthusiasm for research.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Kavita Verma, Head of the Department of Physics, Patna Women’s College.
