The Department of Sociology conducted an Alumni Connect program on 22nd August 2024 in B.J. Sullivan Hall, Patna Women’s College, featuring a Guest Lecture on “Attainment of Sustainable Development Goals through Environmental Leadership.” at 12:00 noon. The lecture was delivered by Ms. Devopriya Dutta, an esteemed alumna of the Department of Sociology and UN Youth Representative at Tarumitra. Ms. Dutta emphasized the symbiotic relationship between the environment and sociology, discussing how social, cultural, and economic factors shape environmental attitudes and practices. She highlighted how this understanding can inform strategies to promote sustainable lifestyles and environmental stewardship. Ms. Dutta also shared insights into Tarumitra, a youth-led organization committed to environmental conservation, and emphasized the interconnectedness of humanity, referring to all as “cousins” due to our shared home—Mother Earth. Her talk inspired students to see their potential in contributing to environmental protection through small but impactful actions. She also introduced Tarumitra’s initiatives, including Green Diwali, Green Holi (using organic colors), and Rakshabandhan with Trees, which symbolize the connection between humans and nature. Ms. Dutta’s question, “What have we given back to our Mother Earth as Guru Dakshina—Global Warming?” left a lasting impression on the audience. The session was attended by students of Semester III and V, along with faculty members.

Dr. Tapashi Bhattacharjee, Head of the Department of Sociology, expressed gratitude to Ms. Dutta for her insightful session. The program concluded with a lively Q&A session, where both students and faculty actively engaged with Ms. Dutta. The event was moderated by Ms. Komal Kumari, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology.
