The Department of Psychology organised an online workshop on ‘Changing the narrative on Suicide: Awareness, Action and Support’ under ‘PWC Alumni Connect’ on 21st September, 2024. It was held in Carmel Hall, Main Building at 9:30 AM. The guest speaker for the workshop was Ms. Farheen Rashid. She is working as an Intervention Specialist at Canadian Mental Health Association, Ontario, Canada; and Alumna of the Department of Psychology, Patna Women’s College, Batch 2013-16. Students from the Department of Psychology attended the workshop. The workshop started with silent prayer for the victims of suicide and suicidal ideation. Ms. Farheen started with talking about the factors that may contribute to suicide like cultural beliefs, stigma, silence around mental health issues and suicide, media representation of suicide cases etc. She addressed the early warning signs and emphasized on how it’s critical to recognise these signs to prevent suicide. She also talked about a five-step action plan for providing mental health first aid to someone who may be considering suicide or harming themselves, named as ALGEE model. She gave certain tasks to the participants to practice the given information. The participants also cleared their doubts related to how to deal with the stigma related to suicide and intervention strategies. The workshop ended with a vote of thanks.
