The Department of Microbiology, Patna Women’s College conducted a Poster making Competition on 13th March ,2023 based on the theme “Women and Glass Ceiling ” under the Women’s day celebration Ojaswini 2.0.
Students of B.Sc semester II participated in the competition in a total of nine groups with full zeal and enthusiasm. Students showcased their artistic skills through the various posters depicting women breaking through the social barrier- glass ceiling and emerging victorious in every aspects of life, touching new heights.
The event was adjudged by Dr Jaya Philip ,Head, Department of Microbiology, Dr Niti Yashwardhini ,Assistant Professor ,Department of Microbiology and Dr Swetnisha, Assistant Professor ,Department of Microbiology ,Patna Women’s College.
The 1st prize was bagged by group no 1 with the participants Aarya Shree,Megha Kumari and Ananya Priyadarshani,2nd prize was won by group no 3 with the participants Mariya Abid,Sada Nizami, Bushra Tanjeem and Stuti Singh and the 3rd prize was won by group no 2 with the participants Aditi Sinha, Ghufrana Azad,Amna Ali, Shubhangi Kumari and Aishwarya Laxmi.
The event ended up with the valuable feedback given by the judges.

The department of Microbiology and Zoology, Patna Women’s College organized the Young Entrepreneurs Presentation and Product Display on 27th February 2023 on the theme “Scientific and Social Innovations” under the aegis of Vigyan Utsav 2023.
The event started with the presentation of a short video on how science can be implemented in startup ideas by young entrepreneurs for the betterment of the society followed by the display of 13 innovative products like Bio detergents, Bio cosmetics, Hair serum, Sanitary pads,Smart shoes, Natural mouthwash,B Klener.
The products displayed by the students aspiring to be young entrepreneurs were cost effective and eco friendly which could be a potential remedy both to environmental and human life thus truly justifying the theme of the event.
The event was adjudged by Mr. Alok John Dean ,National and International collaboration and consultancy services, Patna Women’s College, Mr. Sachin Kumar, Founder, Sattuz café ,Mr. Gaurav Prakash , Chief marketing officer at Blue Medix pharmacy, Patna.
The event was successfully organized under the enthusiastic supervision of the teachers of both the department.

A two days Hands-on Training Program was organized by the Department of Microbiology on 14th and 15th March 2023, on the topic, Horizontal gene transfer in Acinetobacter sp. where the students were demonstrated and were asked to carry out the procedures involved in the creation of a competent cell, transformation of competent bacterial cells with plasmid DNA and calculation of the transformation efficiency.
The program was attended by about 68 students belonging to the IV and VI semester of the Department of Microbiology.
This Hands-on training program helped the students to understand and handle the techniques of Molecular Biology and Recombinant DNA technology. In this Hands-on Training program held, Acinetobacter Sp. was used for transformation with plasmid DNA. The students therefore learned the importance of genetic transformation in transfer of the desired characters into the host organism.
The Hands-on Training program enthusiastically supervised by Dr. Jaya Philip, Head of Department of Microbiology and the assistant professors, Dr. Niti Yashvardhini , Dr. Preeti Swarupa and Dr. Swetnisha, proved to be a highly informative and useful one where the students were given a chance to perform the experiment thus enhancing the knowledge and polishing the laboratory skills of the young trainees.
The event ended successfully with feedback session from the students and photography sessions conducted thereafter.

A value based class was conducted on 10th February, 2023 for Semester IV students of Microbiology by Dr. Preeti Swarupa, Assistant professor, Department of Microbiology,Patna Women’s College. The topic of discussion for the day was “Never do less to be more”.
The students were taught about focusing on what’s good in our lives and being thankful for the things we have rather than complaining about every single thing and playing the victim card. All those who are able to work must try to do some work so that they can earn their livelihood decently than indulge in begging. We should give them some time to improve and provide them physical, emotional and psychological support and as it is said “God helps those who help themselves”.
Emphasis were laid through small videos and discussions. Overall, it was an interactive class for the students that will enhance their values.

The Department of Microbiology, Patna Women’s College organised a Model Making Competition on the theme the “Structure of Biomolecules” on 9th February, 2023 for the students of B.Sc. Semester II.
A total of nine goups participated in this competition and exhibited the different structures of Biomolecules like Glucose, A, B and Z DNA form ,Triglyceride , tRNA, Beta pleated sheets etc.
The judges for the competition were Dr. Shobha Srivastava ,Head, Department of Zoology, Patna Women’s College, Mr Rabindra Nath Majumdar, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, Patna Women’s College and Dr.Urvashi Sinha, Assistant Professor, Department of Botany, Patna Women’s College.
The 3-D models provided a clear understanding of the structure of biomolecules that form an essential component of the biotic world.
The judges were overwhelmed to see the creativity of the participants to highlight the detailed structure. They gave their feedback and appreciated the efforts made .
Dr. Jaya Philip, Head, Department of Microbiology, Patna Women’s College, thanked the judges and announced the results.The 1st position was bagged by group no.1 for the topic “Triglyceride”.The 2nd position was won by group no.7 for the topic “tRNA”and the 3rd position was won by group no.6 for the topic “Beta-Pleated sheet”.
All the teachers of the department, Dr. Niti Yashvardhini, Dr. Preeti Swarupa and Dr.Swetnisha were present for the event.

An online guest lecture on the theme “Role of mosquito microbiota in vector-borne disease management ” was organized by the Department of Microbiology on 20th September 2022 in the Mother Veronica Excellence Centre, Science block , Patna Women’s College, Patna from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm . The Resource person for the lecture was Dr. Kamlesh Kumar Yadav , Head, Research and Development, Brandenburg Innovation UK Ltd., Bangalore and former researcher at DRDO, Tezpur, Assam, India.
The Program started with a welcome address delivered by Dr.Jaya Philip, Head , department of Microbiology and proceeded with the discussion of highly informative topics including types of mosquitoes and their role in spreading diseases such as dengue, filariasis, chikungunya etc. Dr. Kamlesh also discussed the management strategies for mosquito and the mosquito borne diseases, emphasizing on the environmental friendly ones , including disruption of the midgut microbiota, genetic modification, paratransgenesis etc. The lecture was highly informative , interactive and productive one, increasing the students understanding in the field of Microbiology and disease management.
The session finally concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Preeti Swarupa, assistant professor, department of Microbiology.
The lecture was attended by over 104 students belonging to the first, third and fifth semester of The Department of Microbiology.
The lecture was enthusiastically supervised by Dr. Jaya Philip, Head of Department of Microbiology and the assistant professors, Dr. Preeti Swarupa , Dr. Niti Yashvardhini and Dr.Swetnisha.

A value based class on the topic “Responsibility towards parents” was conducted for the students of semester II on 20th January 2023 by Dr. Preeti Swarupa , Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology, Patna Women’s College. Students were taught that no matter how big or successful we become we should always take care of the feelings and requirements of our parents because they are the ones who struggled in their lives to make us what we are today. Emphasis was made on the concept that when we grow up we should not just get busy in our own life but it is our responsibility to look after our parents as they did when we were small. Overall, it was an interactive session where students also shared their notions and beliefs

Department of Microbiology, Patna Women’s College, Autonomous, Patna University organized a Fresher’s Day Programme to welcome the B.Sc Semester l students (2022-2025) on 31.8.2022.The programme started with a Prayer Dance followed by a Welcome speech by Dr. Jaya Philip, Head , Department of Microbiology. The Cultural committee members Ms. Manisha Prasad and Ms Samiksha Sinha were welcomed with plant sampling and flowers.The Programme was hosted by Yemna Abid and Saumya Sinha. The students presented a melodious group song. Further, a self written Poem on the theme ‘Nature and Empowerment ‘ was recited by Mariya Abid. Aishwarya Laxmi presented a Hindi Poem ‘Naari ‘. Students mesmerized the audience with an energetic Laavni dance. Students also presented an entertaining Skit on ‘Examination Day’ Ankita Anand was crowned Miss Fresher of the department. The Cultural committee members praised the students for their active participation and enthusiasm. The Supervisors of the programme were Dr. Preeti. Dr. Niti and Dr. Swetnisha. The vote of thanks was given by Ariba Khan. The freshers Day Programme served as a platform for the new students to showcase there creative skills and talents.

A display competition on the theme “ Microbes in fermentation and flavour “ was held in the Department of Microbiology for the students of 5th semester on 20th July 2022 under the supervision of Dr. Jaya Philip , Head, Department of Microbiology, Dr. Niti Yashvardhini, Dr. Preeti Swarupa , Dr. Swetnisha, Assistant Professor Department Of Microbiology. In the contest the students presented various fermented dishes including dosa, idli, vada, kimchi, and many more prepared by the biological process of fermentation thus enhancing the nutritional value. The event was judged by Dr. Jyotsana Kumari, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry and Dr. Urvashi Sinha, Assistant Professor Department of Botany. The students got a golden opportunity to showcase their talents and a chance to develop new ones and also enhance the spirit of team work. The students were praised by the judges for their vibrant presentation, hardwork and for the successful completion of the event.In this competition first place was secured by group 6: Saba naaz, Anoushka,Tripti Kumari ,Prapti ojha , Surbhi Singh

A Slogan Writing Competition on the topic, “Yoga for Well-being” was organised by the Department of Microbiology on 2nd May, 2022 for the students of 2nd semester from 9:00 a.m – 11:00 a.m and for the students of 4th semester from 11:00 a.m – 1:00 p.m.
Nearly 60 students participated in the contest. The participants exhibited their artistic skills by displaying physical and mental benefits of Yoga with slogan to motivate the practice of Yoga for better health.

An online guest lecture was organised by the Department of Microbiology on the topic “Covid 19 Vaccine: The Science Behind It” on 28.04.2022 from 01:00 PM onwards. Dr. Manoj Kumar, Head, Department of Veterinary Microbiology, Bihar Animal Sciences University, Patna was the resource person. Nearly eighty students attended the lecture. The event started with welcome address by Dr. Jaya Philip, Head, Department of Microbiology. Dr. Kumar highlighted the basic structure of SARS CoV-2 virus and its mode of infection and also elucidated its importance in designing the coronavirus vaccine. He highlighted the different strategies involved in designing and delivery of vaccine with special reference to coronavirus vaccine. He explained his contribution in controlling bird flu at Patna Zoo and shared his views on his first hand experience in handling this virus. At the end students put forth their questions and got their queries and doubts regarding the coronavirus cleared. Vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Preeti Swarupa. Dr. Niti Yashvardhini was the moderator of the event.

The Dept. of Microbiology organized a value based education class on the topic “Save the Earth” for the students of semester II on 28th April, 2022. The facilitator for the class was Dr. Preeti Swarupa, Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology, Patna Women’s College.

Earth Day is celebrated annually on 22nd of April, to demonstrate support for environmental protection.The message included celebrating our shared home by learning how to best protect it and create a brighter, healthier future for all. Let’s preserve and cherish the pale blue dot because there is much more to thrive and much more to show.

The Dept. of Microbiology organized a value based education class on the topic “Save the Earth” for the students of semester IV on 28th April, 2022. The facilitator for the class was Dr. Niti Yashvardhini, Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology, Patna Women’s College.

Students were taught about the consequences & impact of human activities on the ecosystem.
Emphasis were laid on the importance and ways to protect the Earth through small videos and discussion.
Altogether, it was an interactive class where students also shared their ideas and notions.

The Department of Microbiology, Patna Women’s College organized an Elocution Competition on the occasion of Earth Day on 22.04.2022 on the theme “Invest in our Planet.” The platform was provided in both English and Hindi. The topic of the competition was- “Environmental Problems and Preventive Approach.” The event was judged by Dr. Preeti Swarupa, Dr. Niti Yashvardhini and Dr. Swetnisha, Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology. Jeny, Esha Garg and Diksha Kaushik were awarded first, second and third prizes respectively. The event was attended by all the students of Semester IV and Semester II along with all the faculty members. The concluding remarks and suggestions were given by Dr. Jaya Philip, Head, Department of Microbiology, Patna Women’s College. This event created awareness among students regarding our planet Earth.

The department of Microbiology organised a Video presentation competition on Gender Sensitization for the students of B.Sc Microbiology semester VI on 9.3.2022 from 12:30 to 1:30 pm.
A total of Eight videos were presented by the students. These videos highlighted the idea of equality among gender in opportunity and aspects with various perspectives of the students. The event converged multiple notions of Gender sensitization through the videos.

The Department of Microbiology, Patna Women’s College celebrated the Fresher’s Day on 29th October, 2021 to welcome it’s new batch of B.Sc Semester I. The cultural committee guest, Ms. Manisha Prasad, Head of the Department of Computer Science and Dr. Rosy Kumari, Assistant Professor, Department of Home Science, Patna Women’s College graced the occasion. The programme started with prayer and a welcome dance performed by Esha Garg, Jeny, Shruti Kumari and Anupama Kumari. Further duet song was performed by Simran and Jigyasa. Poem recitation was done by Ashwini and Tanya. A humorous skit was performed by Anjali, Jahanvi, Surbhi, Anshu, Anam, Prachi and Bhavya. A solo song and solo dance performance was given by Anupama Kumari and Esha Garg respectively. The program was well hosted by Diksha and Pragya. Anupama Kumari was crowned Miss Fresher, Microbiology, 2021 by the Head of the Department, Dr. Jaya Philip. The event was wrapped up with a vote of thanks given by Simran Kumari.

Value Based Class was conducted for students of 3rd semester on the topic “Equality & Faith in God on 15th September 2021 by Dr. Arti Kumari, Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology of Patna Women’s College.

Students were taught that everyone is equal and everyone should be treated equally for a greater good, with the help of a short film called “The Wrong Rock”.
