Abstract: The present work is related to the water quality assessment and the extent of pollution in water body The present study depicts about the various effects of idol immersion in Ganga River by collecting the pre and post water samples from River Ganga. The idols are constructed of different components which when immersed in river leads to significant alteration in the water quality AAS technique was used for the detection of heavy metals. Physico-chemical parameters namely alkalinity, turbidity, electrical conductivity,

phosphate, sulphate, pH, chloride, fluoride, total hardness, COD, most probable number (MPN) etc were determined and were compared with Indian Standard Bureau, calculated according to mathematical expression. It was concluded that deviation in physico-chemical parameters indicates that Ganga River water is not safe for domestic use.

Keywords: Idol immersion, Hardness of water, Coliform, Water pollution, COD, MPN, pH.
