The Legacy of the Alumni

Dr. (Mrs.) Kalawati Tripathi, was born in 1923. She was University Professor and Head, Dept. of Hindi, Patna Women’s College, Patna University. She joined Patna Women’s College as lecturer in 1948. She was elected and nominated member of Patna University Senate for three years. She was also Member of the Governing Body, Patna Women’s College; Member of the Governing Body, Bankipore Girls High School, Patna and member- Bihar Legislative Council (Nominated) 1984-1990. She breathed her last in 2009.

Dr. Indira Verma was born on 24th July 1935 at Motihari. She passed her matriculation in 1951 and was married to Shri Bhisma Prasad, an engineer. She came to Patna after her marriage and concentrated on her studies. She did the Intermediate and Graduation from Patna Women’s College. She got first class in B.A. Hons. She passed her M.A. from Patna University in First Position. After completing her studies she was selected by the BPSC for the post of lecturer. She joined Patna Women’s College as a teacher in 1957. Dr. Sister Lucile A.C. was the Principal at the time of her joining. She got a chance to learn a lot from her experiences. During her teaching career she was also involved in extracurricular activities of the College. She played active role in organizing sports, cultural activities, conducting examination, etc. She regarded Dr. Sister Liceria A.C. as her friend, philosopher and guide. She worked under her guidance. Till today she is maintaining her close association with her. At present she is leading a quiet and peaceful retired life. Her daughters are settled in US. She is very fond of Dr. Ameeta Jaiswal, Head, Dept. of Philosophy. She has maintained her close association with her till today.

Shama Talat, was born in 1st January, 1943.She Passed 10thin 1958 first division; I.A. inArts in 1960 second division; Bachelor of Artsin 1962 second class in Urdu; Master of Arts in 1965 second class in Economics.She had been in Patna Women’s College hostel for four years from 1958 to 1962. Sister Lucile A.C. was the Principal at that time and she was her beloved professor of Economics. She liked this subject that is why she changed her line and did her M.A. in Economics.

Dr. Alpana Sen Gupta was born in 1953. Professor& Head (Retd), P.G. Centre of Psychology, College of Commerce, Arts & Science (COCAS), PPU. HerGraduation is from Patna Women’s College, Psychology Honors.Session: 1971- 1973, M.A. & PhD (Patna University, Ten years P.G. teaching and Research experience as a Research Associate (1983- 1988, 1992 – 1996) at Dept. of Psychology, Patna University, She feels very proud being alumni of Patna Women’s College. She admits that she has learned discipline, dedication for work, honesty to serve the needy and downtrodden from the college. Cultural heritage of this college is unique. Today, what she is she owes to this college, teachers and parents. Remembrance of the golden days of student life at Patna Women’s College makes her smile.

Mrs. Sudha Bhatt (Virlley) was born on 11th October 1938 in Patna. She did her schooling from Mount Carmel School, Patna and did graduation from Patna Women’s College in 1961 under Principal Mother Theodosia A.C. She completed her B.Ed. In 1961-1962 from B.Ed. College, Patna with Hindi Literature as her subject. She got married and came to Jamshedpur. She joined St. Joseph Welfare Centre, Golmuri (Bishop House) 1971 under Principal Fr. Joseph Currie and parish priest Fr. CR Prabhu who was in charge of JYOTI club in St. Joseph Welfare Centre under Fr. Currie. She took Stitching and tailoring classes for poor women in Bishop House. She joined Loyola High School, Jamshedpur as a Hindi teacher on 14th January 1972 under Principal Fr. McGauly. She was in charge of Hindi drama and skit that was performed during Parent Teachers’ Meeting. She also trained students for Hindi elocution. She retired in 2000 with one year of extension under Fr. Pius Fernandes.

Justice Gyan Sudha Mishra Years in College and Course Pre-University- 1965, B.A Part –I: 1965-1966, B.A (Hons) Political Science: 1966-1968. (Honors classes were held in Patna College in those days.). Former Judge of Patna & Rajasthan, High Court. She was the first Woman Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court at Ranchi. She became the fourth Woman Judge of the Supreme Court of India , New Delhi and the only Lady Judge from Bihar and Jharkhand so far, to have been appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of India New Delhi. Currently functioning as Arbitrator in National and International Commercial Arbitrations

Patna Women’s College Alumni Association conducted a General Body Meeting on
21st November 2024. Around 120 alumni of the college from different batches attended the meeting. Dr. Sister M. Rashmi A.C., Principal, addressed the meeting and welcomed all the Alumni. Briefing about the agenda of the meeting, she also discussed about the achievements of 2024 and the target for 2025.

Dr. Ameeta Jaiswal, President of Alumni Association, taking it further discussed about the planning of activities for the coming year and about the PWCAA Annual Alumni Meet. She also mentioned about the noble work that Patna Women’s College has been conducting since years and how others can also contribute. Measures for the expansion of the association were also suggested by the alumni present in the meeting.
The meeting concluded with the Vote of thanks presented by Dr. Shefali Roy, Secretary of the Alumni Association (PWCAA), Professor, Patna University.

“Mental Health Awareness Programme in Government School”

An Outreach Programme was held by the Patna Women’s College Alumni Association (PWCAA) in association with the Department of Psychology, Patna Women’s College, Autonomous at Government School, Behind Raj Bhavan Colony, Patna.
The programme was held under the able guidance of Dr. Sister M. Rashmi A.C., Principal, Patna Women’s College and Prof. Ameeta Jaiswal, Chairperson, Patna Women’s College Alumni Association. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Nupur Sinha, Head, Department of Psychology and Ms. Manisha Kumari, Psychological Counsellor, Guidance and Counselling Centre, Department of Psychology, Patna Women’s College.

The students were made aware about their mental health, its importance, through discussion and activities. Through drawing and games, the concept of mental health was explained to them

“Sahas Award Ceremony” on 7th March 2024 to address the people who have served the society.

Program was commenced with Ms. Sushmita Chakraborty, Assistant Professor and Member, Alumni Association stated that SAHAS which stands for Sashaktikaran Hissedari Aevam Sahishnuta, and signifies the real empowerment comes only with Gender Equality.
Dr. Sister M. Rashmi A.C., Principal, Patna Women’s College also addressed the gathering and said that the real empowerment will come with gender equality. It was followed by honouring Ms. Rakhi Sharma, CEO of Shanti Kutir and Disha Mukti Kendra, Youth Mobilisation for National Advancement (YMNA), Patna for her contribution towards Youth, Women and Children. Dr. Sister M. Tanisha A.C. Vice Principal conferred award to Mr. Abhinav Kumar, Garima Grih, also part of Dostana Safar, Bihar for your efforts towards securing social justice for Transgender community and commitment towards the society. Dr. Ameeta Jaiswal, Vice Chairperson conferred award to Dr. Neetu Kumari Navgeet, Folk Singer and Swachhata Abhiyan Brand Ambassador, Patna Nagar Nigam for her contribution towards enrichment of Culture, Society and Environment.

Organic Makar Sankranti

Patna Women’s College Alumni Association (PWCAA) in association with Eco Task Force, Srishti (Student Environment Club) and PWC Alumni Association enthusiastically celebrated Organic Makar Sankranti on 13th January, 2024 in the Basketball Court from 1:00 p.m. onwards. One day before the celebration i.e., on 12.01.2024, a Kite Making Competition was organized to celebrate this auspicious occasion. The Makar Sankranti marks the end of winter and transit of sun into capricorn Zodiac as we step into the new year and the beginning of new harvest season. This season in India is observed by different names like Lohri, Sankranti, Pongal and Bihu. The celebration commenced with the exhibition of colourful kites which later got evaluated by the three judges namely, Dr. Zareen Fatima, Head Department of Economics, Mrs.Papita Dey Biswas, Coordinator Performing Arts, and Dr. Kamlendra Kumar, Assistant professor Department of Philosophy. The winners of the Kite-Making Competition were then announced by Dr. Sister M.Rashmi A.C. , Principal, Patna Women’s College. The programme proceeded by paying symbolic Earth Tax with fistful of rice, followed up by kite flying by the teachers and the students. The celebration concluded with a Khichidi feast for all the faculty and staff members of the college under the guidance of Dr. Aparajita Krishna, Dr. Awadesh Kumar , Dr. Amrita Choudhary and team. The entire programme was moderated by Ms. Meenakshi Mishra, Coordinator, Srishti Club. The whole event took place under the meticulous supervision of Dr. Ameeta Jaiswal, President, PWC Alumni Association and Mrs. Shobha Srivastava, Vice President, Eco Task Force.

On 8th November 2023, The Annual General Body meeting of Patna Women’s College Alumni Association was organised at Lucile Memorial Hall. Around 120 alumni of the college from different batches attended the meeting. Dr Sister M. Rashmi A.C., Principal addressed all the alumni present and briefed them about the agenda of the meeting; which included the Achievements of 2023 and the Target for 2024. The President of the Alumni Association,
Dr Ameeta Jaiswal, welcomed the group and briefed them about the activities the college has been conducting and how others can participate in the Noble work. The college has been extending social work services in areas like environment, education, gender sensitivity and healthcare. She urged more participation from the alumni. She informed about general body election as the previous tenure would be completed in 2023. Dr Amrita Chowdhury, Coordinator IQAC and Head, Department of Geography briefed the members about the NACC peer team visit and requested them to be a part of it. Dr Maya Shankar, Professor, Patna University, Dr Veena, AIIMS Patna and Dr. Shefali Roy, Professor, Patna University were also present during the event.

Patna Women’s College Alumni Association started a Fitness Club today for the Staff of the college under the guidance of the Principal Dr. Sister Rashmi A.C. who is also the Chairperson of PWCAA and Dr. Ameeta Jaiswal, President PWCAA. There were two Sessions of one hour each – Yoga class was held by
Ms. Mitu Kumari, Yoga Instructor and Aerobics was conducted by Mr. Sanjay Kumar, Certified Trainer Cross Fit Studio. All the exercises aimed at building endurance, strength and flexibility in the participants. A course module of
3 months has been prepared for one batch of 40 staff, after which another batch will have the Sessions.  The participants found the programme quite beneficial for them. The Alumni Association of PWC aims to conduct such programs within the campus for the physical and mental health of the Staff.

A Workshop on “Inclusive Business for Sustainable Livelihood”

The Department of Business Administration and Alumni Association, Patna Women’s College, Patna organized a Workshop on “Inclusive Business for Sustainable Livelihood”. The Resource Person was Ms. Richa Vatsayayan, Director Sanitrust and Alumna, Patna Women’s College. She focused on the significance of the business models and their contribution towards creativity, innovation and sustainability. Team building exercises was also incorporated in the workshop by Ms. Richa Vatsyayan to enlighten students on the importance of teams in entrepreneurship and sustainable development. The President of the Alumni Association and Head, Department of Philosophy, Dr. Ameeta Jaiswal, Patna Women’s College, Head of the Department of Business Administration, Dr. Pallawi Ambreesh Kumar, Ms. Kumari Priya, Dr. Ruchita Masih and teachers from the Department of Commerce were present on the occasion.

The Department of Psychology, Patna Women’s College, Autonomous organized a Session on Mental Health on the WHO theme “Mental Health is a universal human right” for the teachers on 14.10.2023. The guest speaker was Dr. Shruti Narain, Senior Psychologist, Patna. The session was organized in association with Alumni Association, Patna Women’s College (PWCAA). The title of presentation was “Mirror-mirror on the wall am I happy after all?” The session started with an introduction to the session and Mental Health given by
Dr. Nupur Sinha, Head, Department of Psychology. Prof. Ameeta Jaiswal, President, Alumni Association, Patna Women’s College welcomed the speaker with a bouquet.

Dr. Shruti Narain asserted how positive self-talk is so important for overall well-being. She also encouraged to have a good work-life HARMONY, ways to deal with the ‘Presenteeism’ at the workplace. Teachers from different departments joined the session. The session was thought-provoking and reflective.

On 05th December, 2022, Alumni Association of Patna Women’s College organized a motivational talk by its illustrious alumna Ms. Manjari Jaruhar, IPS, Rtd. Spl. DG, CISF and author of Amazon best seller book ‘Madam Sir.’

The programme began with a welcome address by Dr. Ameeta Jaiswal, President, Alumni Association. Ms. Manjari Jaruhar was felicitated with a shawl and a sapling by the Principal Dr. Sister M. Rashmi A.C., Patna Women’s College. She was the student of English honours from Patna Women’s College in the Batch 1968-1971.

She inspired the students to refuse to be fettered; by difficulties to have self-belief and to find the path for themselves and to be passionate about their career. Dr. Sister M. Liceria A.C., Former Principal, Patna Women’s College was also present along with Dr. Sahar Rehman, Head, Department of English, Dr. Devina Krishna, and teachers from the Department of English as well as other departments were present.

The session ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. Shahla Rehana, Associate Professor, Department of English. The programme was attended by nearly 150 students.

and many other alumi conducted the programme. The event began with a Nukkad Natak titled ‘Jagarukta Samvidhan Ki’ portraying the importance of the Constitution and urging all to respect and follow the principles enshrined in the Indian Constitution.

On 19th October 2022, The Alumni Association of Patna Women’s College had organized a Diwali Milan programme on the topic “Awareness on Diwali Burns” with the Inter College Women’s Association (ICWA) students, who are tutored by the students of Patna Women’s College.

The Resource person for the day was Dr. Veena Singh, Head, Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery, AIIMS, Patna and Alumni of Patna Women’s College. The programme started with a welcome address by Dr. Ameeta Jaiswal, President, Alumni Association and Head, Department of Philosophy where she gave the welcome address.

Then, Dr. Sister Celine Crasta A.C., Coordinator ICWA and Head, Department of History, presented a Sapling to the Eminent Guest as a token of gratitude.

Thereafter, Dr. Veena Singh, Head, Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery, AIIMS, Patna started the session by giving her best wishes on Diwali, then she explained the students about the side effects of burning crackers without proper precautions and made everyone aware about Diwali Burns and how to avoid it. She also demonstrated the students the proper way to burn the crackers.

Then, Dr. Sister Celine Crasta A.C., thanked the resource person. Towards the end, all the alumni teachers distributed the Diwali sweets and Diyas to the students of Inter College Women’s Association (ICWA) students.

The whole programme was supervised by Dr. Ameeta Jaiswal, President, Alumni Association and Head, Department of Philosophy and, Dr. Sister Celine Crasta A.C., Coordinator ICWA and Head, Department of History and Ms. Samiksha Sinha, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociolgy and Alumni Association of Patna Women’s College.

Rashmi A.C., Principal, Patna Women’s College and the President of Alumni Association, Dr. Ameeta Jaisawal, Dr. Priyanka, Assistant Professor, Department of History, Dr. Kumkum Rani, Assistant Professor, Department of Philosophy, Dr. Sumeet Ranjan, Assistant Professor of Zoology and the owner of Cross Fit Studio. The Coordinator was Ms. Sunita Kumari.
The entire fitness programme was conducted for the students of government school by the trainer Mr. Sanjay Kumar, Cross Fit Studio. Mental and physical fitness exercises and other sports activities were conducted.

World Environment Week, 2021

A series of online program and webinars were conducted by Tarumitra from 1st June to 5th June 2021. It saw the representation from all across India and the globe as well. Activities ranged from best out of waste, cooking without fire, seed collection, use old clothes to make bags and masks, cardboard making for shelves and book holders, bird feeders, using leftover food to make compost and other innovative ideas.

In the evening, on 4th June and 5th June 2021, two International Webinars were hosted. The theme was according to the United Nation Protocol “Ecosystem Restoration”. Around 500 participants participated from all over including Mr. Tripurari Sharan, Chief Secretary, Government of Bihar, Dr. Ashok Ghosh, Chairman, BSPCB, Dr. Father Robert Athickal, Founder of Tarumitra, Father Tony Pendanath, Director of Tarumitra and students, teachers & participants from all over.

Dr. Priyanka, Assistant Professor, Department of History and Ms. Neha, Assistant Professor Department of Geography, alumnae of Patna Women’s College organized “An Awareness Programme on Environmental Conservation” at Kanya Madhya Vidyalay (Rajbhawan Campus) on 07.12.2020. The topic of the event was “Environment Conservation (painting and Speech Competition)”. Around 50 students participated in this event.

The students of the school took pledge for the environmental conservation. They were made aware of water conservation, plantation, waste management. Harmful impact of the use of plastic was also discussed with the students.

Ms. Devopriya Dutta, Alumni and Member of Governing Body of Alumni Association of Patna Women’s College contributed her services in Transgender Free Health Check-up Camp organized by Netram Eye Foundation, Delhi on 23.12.2020.

Patna Women’s College Alumni Association organised an Awareness Programme on COVID Vaccine trial at AIIMS, Patna in collaboration with the doctors in-charge of it. About 30 students and some alumni teachers attended the programme on 24.12.2020

It gives me immense pleasure to inform you all that Patna Women’s College Alumni Association (PWCAA) is  now  a registered association.This year all the departments have conducted Alumni Meet with a good response from the Alumni.We are preparing to conduct the Annual Alumni Meet on 21st December 2022.We shall be extremely happy to see you all on that day.

Regular Outreach  activities related to the environment, health, skill enhancement are being conducted by College Alumni and our active Alumni Ms. Devopriya Dutta, Social Activist & Environmentalist and Dr. Veena Singh head Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery, AIIMS Patna  I wish more alumni should come forward for  such activities as well as outreach programs. We are in the process of bringing out an annual News letter this year
