PWC Central Library

Patna Women’s College features an air-conditioned, computerized open access Central Library with large collection of books, journals, magazines, CDs/DVDs and newspapers. Central Library is the nerve centre of all the academic activities of the college. It provides a place where teachers and students can pursue research and study. The library is established in 1950 and shifted in new building in 1981. The sitting capacity is 200 and dimension is 9,752 sq. feet. The library is housed in a spacious part of the college having enough space for reading and reference work. For security and safety, the library has CCTV surveillance, fire extinguishers and anti theft RFID gate antenna available.

Besides the Central Library, various departments have their own departmental libraries. The Central library and departmental libraries serve the entire college community. There is also an E-library and OPAC section within the central library with high speed internet facilities. High speed Wi-Fi facilities are also there for smooth surfing the e-resources. The central library, at present, has a collection of more than 1 Lakh books, various journals, magazines, CDS/DVDs, Institutional repositories, Newspapers etc. The central library also provides e-resources through Delnet, Sage Publications and NDLI to all users of the college.

The library is fully automated with SOUL 3.0 software and RFID technology. All documents are computerised for catalogue. Books are searched through WEBOPAC on LAN. Transactions of books are done through RFID Technology. Smart Identity cards are issued to students and teachers. The library also provides access to subscribed and open access resources through the digital library services.

The Central Library of Patna Womens College has introduced a new Add-on Vocational Certificate Course in Library and Information Science from the current academic year 2025. Central Library also offers Internship for Library and Information Science Students.

Every year Central Library organises various activities on different themes to make students truly informed, creative and intellectually more competent. User orientation programme is conducted every year for all new comers. To promote maximum and proper utilization of library facilities and services, the central library gives away Best Library User Award to the students every year, who make maximum use of library resources and facilities.

LIBRARY RULES AND REGULATION

  • Library Visiting Hours:
  • Monday to Saturday: 9 A.M. to 4 P.M.
  • Circulation Timing: 9 A.M. to 3 P.M.
  • Strict discipline and SILENCE must be observed inside the Library.
  • All the students while entering the Library should keep their personal belongings at the library property counter against a token.
  • Use of mobile phone is strictly prohibited inside the library.
  • Membership is obligatory for all students within 2 months of admission.
  • Smart Identity card is compulsory for entering the library and for all Library transaction.
  • Loss of Smart ID Card must be reported in writing to the Principal immediately.
  • For Library entry / exit, users must swipe or scan their smart ID card at the RFID Access Control Reader.
  • Library transactions will be done through RFID KIOSK and Book Drop Box.
  • All students are permitted to borrow 3 books at a time for duration of 7 days. After the due date, a fine of Rs.5/- per day per book will be applicable.
  • Students should check the physical condition of the books before borrowing otherwise they will be held responsible any damage.
  • If the books are lost or damaged then the borrower shall replace the books of the same edition or latest edition or pay the cost of the book according to Library rule.
  • Students will have to return all borrowed books before filling their annual examination form.
  • Reference Books, Journals, Magazines, Dictionary, Encyclopaedia, Year Books, Handbooks are only for consultation within the Library premise.
  • Students should not mark, underline, damage or tear pages of Library materials.
  • Computer in the Library premises should be used for academic purposes only.
  • Do not temper with the computer setting. Follow the internet safety guidelines.
  • It is advisable to use library resources i.e. Books, Computers & Magazines carefully.
  • Photocopying services are fee based with a rate of Rs.1/- per A4 page.
  • To avoid violation of the Copyright Law only 10% of the book may be photocopied.
  • Fragile, rare or heavily used reference books may not be allowed for photocopying.
  • In case of any difficulty Library users can approach the Librarian.
  • Your cooperation with Library staff and security personnel is highly appreciated.
COMPUTER LAB RULES
  1. Students are not allowed to carry any bag or folder inside the lab.
  2. Observe silence in the lab.
  3. Surfing through the website that is ethically wrong and sending emails that are ethically wrong is strictly prohibited.
  4. Only college software is to be used, No software of any kind is to be brought into the lab.
  5. Mobile phones cannot be used in the lab
  6. Playing games in the lab is a strictly prohibited.
  7. Students are not allowed to use personal Pen Drive, CD’s etc. in the computer lab. In emergency situations, contact the Librarian.
  8. Food and drinks are not allowed inside the lab.
  9. Do not move the chairs around.

LIBRARY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

 

  • RFID Services: RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is an automated library system which refers to a technology where by digital data encoded in RFID Tags or Smart labels are captured by a reader via radio wave. The system is comprised of two components: Tags and Readers. The Reader is a device that has one or more antennas that emit radio waves and receipt signals back from the RFID tag.

Our Central Library has installed the following RFID Devices.

  • RFID Enabled Self Check-In Check-Out Kiosk: This is an independent touch screen based kiosk for borrowers to perform issue – return functions on their own. With it inbuilt screen and printer, patron can view and print transaction related information such as book issued, outstanding fine (if any) etc. Customized information can also be printed on the transaction slip.
  • RFID Book Drop Station: This is the touch screen based stand alone multi protocol book drop primarily used for returning library books. It helps in better circulation and gives time flexibility to patron for returning of library materials issued by them. All the related information is printed on the transaction slip.

 

  • Staff station for circulation desk: Staff station is specially designed for library circulation desk application. With range upto 25 cm. It can be used for entry of new books (through tagging) or borrowers and issues / return of books at circulation desk.

 

  • Security Gate Antenna System with two pedestals: 3D security gate are placed at exit gate of the library to keep check on unauthorized books going outside. It will have a read range upto 1m. It has inbuilt audio visual alert facility for theft detection. The tag is a small ‘signal transmitter’ that you put on the merchandise that you want to protect. The tag will signal to the EAS antennas to make them alarm if they come to close.
  • RFID Handheld Reader: RFID handheld reader is mainly used in stock verification of books which can be done in hours instead of days with handheld reader system. It can also be used in searching a particular book by taking the reader to library racks.

 

  • Smart Card Registration Reader: This is small reader for registration of smart card or can be used at the time of Tagging / Registering of books. It can be easily shifted and seamlessly installed between computers, as and when needed. Its lower read range ensures single tag operation without detecting surrounding tags.

 

  • RFID Access Control Reader: The Access Control Reader reads the data taken from signals received from each RFID reader enabling reader to accept and deny request to access certain amenities based on access levels or specific permission. Access panel which are parent devices that control card reader and make these grant and deny decision allow for easy integration with RFID reader.

 

  • Smart Card Printing System: This is used for printing of users smart cards which includes card printer, web camera, pen tablet and card printing software. Print technology direct to card dye-sublimation transfer print capabilities full-colour and UV Printing capability in the Alphanumeric text, logos and digitized signature.

 

  • Smart Cards: Smart Cards are standard 1K Mifare technology based contact less smart card used for various applications such as Identity card, employee cards, access control and canteen cards.

 

  • RFID Tags: RFID tags are rewritable passive HF tags working on 13.56 MHz frequency. Available in various types and form factors these are used for tagging library materials to uniquely identify particular tagged items using the RFID based automated library management system.
  • Middleware application: Middleware is a customized application to interface data from various RFID Hardware products to the existing library management system.

 

LIBRARY SERVICES

 

Patna Women’s College Central Library provides the following services to the students and teachers of the college:

  • Circulation Services: The circulation services of the books in the library are provided by Two Counters. Books are issued to the teachers and students from the Issue Counter. Each student can issue three books for a week. The book is returned on due date which is entered on the date slip. Books are issued through RFID self check-in and check-out kiosk. The returning of books is operated from the Book return counter which has been made fully automated. Books are returned through RFID book drop box.
  • Book Classification and Cataloguing Services: The classification of the library holdings according to the different subjects and branches of study; and the cataloguing of the same are carried out in the Technical Section of the library.

 

  • Reference Services: The library has a spacious reading room with a seating capacity of 144. The reading room is well lit and well ventilated. 18 Double Sided, 24 Single Sided subject cupboards and 12 special reference cupboards are well stocked with text and reference books as to lay out a delightful panorama of knowledge. The users are also free to select the books as per their choice and requirement.

 

  • Mezzanine floor (Extension reading room / Post Graduate Reading Room): Mezzanine floor has a spacious with capacity of 50. The floor is well lit and well ventilated. 16 PG books cupboards. 10 Computers for P.G. Students. The users are also free to select the books as per their choice and requirement.
  • E-Library Services: The library is fully automated in the fields of computerized record of book collections, library membership records of students and cataloguing of books. Information is the most contemporary trends of E-resource information; PWC Central Library has obtained memberships from E-libraries like DELNET, INFLIBNET, Sage Publication Journals and NDLI Club Member.

 

  • DELNET: Started by the India International Centre Library and supported by the Ministry of Communications and IT, Government of India, DELNET promotes sharing of E-resources among the users through the development of a network of libraries. The Central Library has signed a MoU with Delnet and has obtained an institutional membership. The users can benefit from a huge collection of E-books and online from this network.

 

  • OPAC Section: in this section Online Public Access Catalogue is available to the student. An OPAC is an online bibliography of library collection. SOUL 3.0is installed and students can search the library books through Soul WebOpac. Students can also avail the other e-resources like DELNET, N-List from Inflibnet and NDLI (National Digital Library of India.

 

  • Multimedia: The multimedia centre is the audio-visual hub of the E-library. It has a rich collection of 576 volumes of educational and other CDs/ DVDs and a plasma T.V. the users have a wide range of subjects to select from; such as literature, fiction, science, computers, environment and health. There is facility of the issue of the CDs/ DVDs also.

Electronic Display Board: Library notices and new arrival books and journals are displayed.

 

  • Magazine / Periodical Section: The section having a good collection of magazines and 33 Sage Journals, 59 other Journals, 28 English Magazines and 12 Hindi Magazines, has a seating capacity of 40 students. There are rich collections of old periodicals (Bound Volumes), newspapers and news paper clipping as well; which the users can refer to anytime for reference work.

 

  • Reprographics/ Xeroxing Services: The library provides very useful and handy reprographics services. The Xeroxing room is equipped with 3 photocopy machines (1 colour and 2 black & white) and 1 copy printer.

 

  • Book repairing services: A separate space is assigned for repairing and binding of old and damaged books.

ADD-ON VOCATIONAL CERTIFICATE COURSE

The Central Library conducts an add-on vocational certificate course in library and information science. The programme includes lecture, practical sessions, project work and assignments. The course is designed to help students develop the skills and knowledge necessary to work in a variety of Library and Information environments, including Academic Libraries, Public Libraries, Special Libraries, Archives, News agencies, Research Institutes and Museums.

 

PROGRAMME OUTCOMES:

Upon completion of the Add-on Course the students will be able to

PO1: Understand the fundamental concepts, Principles and theories related to Library and Information Science.

PO2: Develop practical skills in employing digital tools and technologies for managing and accessing information resources.

1. Library and Society: Role of the libraries in the society, Implication of five laws of Library Science, Library Associations and Legislations.
2. Library Management: Elements, Functions and Principles of management, Book selection tools and methods, Library sections.

LIS-II                                                            Document Processing                                                                   (2 credits)

(Theory: 1 credit + Practical and Assignment: 1 credit)

Unit Topics to be covered
1. Library classification: Types and Schemes of Library classification, Classifying documents using DDC, Call Number.
2. Library Cataloguing: Meaning, Types of Library catalogues, Cataloguing Codes – AACR2 (Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules-2)

LIS-III                                   INFORMATION SERVICES AND COMPUTER APPLICATIONS                          (2 credits)

(Theory: 1 credit + Practical and Assignment: 1 credit)

1. Information sources and services: Meaning, Need, Different Types and their importance.
2. Library Automation: Basics of computer, Different Library softwares (SOUL etc.) and their functions.

DISTRIBUTION OF MARKS:

  • Course 1: Theory (60) + Project (30) + Assignment (10)
  • Course 2: Theory (60) + Practical (30) + Assignment (10)
  • Course 3: Theory (60) + Practical (30) + Assignment (10)

Each course carries 100 marks.

 

TOTAL MARKS: 300

 

EVALUATION: The students will be evaluated at the end of the course on the basis of final examination and practical assignments. Pass certificates will be awarded to the students securing 45% and above.
