Highlights of the Department
- The Department of Home Science provides need-based education to girl students in the theory and practice to meet the day to day challenges of life. This would enable them to play diverse roles in life as a housewife, a working woman, a mother, a nation builder and a responsible and responsive human being.
- Over the years our P.G students have won laurels and were the recipients of Gold Medals in the University examinations.
- Research work is undertaken by the students at P.G and U.G levels under the supervision and guidance of the department staff.
- A Health Centre was inaugurated in the year 2010. Health check-ups for the college staff and students are conducted periodically.
- Department holds various Awareness Programmes /Interactive Sessions /Seminars for the staff and students on various health issues, first aid, disaster management and so on and many eminent doctors are invited to give input sessions.
- National and International Days of importance-National Nutrition Week, First Aid Day, Dietetic Day and so on, are marked with various programmes like quiz, exhibition, poster competition etc.
- Teachers upgrade themselves by attending refresher courses /national -international seminars/symposium. They also present papers and publish an article in journals.
Activities
The department of Home Science had conducted a personality development class on February 28th, 2023, for UG (semester II, IV, and VI) and PG (semester II ) students. Dr. Suniti Bhagat was the facilitator of the class. The video shown, conveyed a number of messages, the most important one being to value God’s greatest blessings: a healthy body and a sound mind. And by being blessed with such a valuable gift, we must be more considerate towards people around us, specially the people who are differently abled, and help them in every possible way. Another important message which came across in the video, was that any kind of disability, cannot be a barrier, to lead a happy life. With strong will and determination and hardwork one can overcome any such limitation.
The Department of Home Science had organised a Parent-Teacher Meet on 23.02.2023 at 10:00am for the UG & PG semester II students. The meeting was conducted to discuss the attendance and performance of the students with their parents. Teachers discussed both the strengths and areas of improvement for the students. Students were motivated to read books and to use the college library. Parents were encouraged to appreciate student participation in academics as well as co-curricular activities. The meeting came to an end with the conclusion that the progress and development of the students depend on the joint efforts of parents and teachers.
The theme of the personality class was value of life, value of family member. The classes was organised for UG VI,IV, II Semester and PG II Semester in 23.01.2023. The facilitator of the programme was Dr. Sunita Kumari. Life is not so easy as we think.Don’t make your hundred percent part dependent on anyone.Your wrong decision can ruin you.Always take life in a balanced way.parents an be ATM Card for their children but children need to be aadhar card for their parents.
The department of Home Science had conducted a Personality development class on September 27th, 2022, for UG (semester V and I) and PG (semester III and I) students . Dr. Sister M. Tanisha A.C was the facilitator of the class. The video shown in the class focused on the faith and relationship between adolescents and their parents. Children’s relationships with their parents and families change during adolescence. They begin to rely less upon the parents and more on their peers. But they need to realise that their family is a secure emotional base where they’ll always be loved and accepted, no matter what’s going on in the rest of their lives. Talking things over with parents can help them feel less stressed. Together, they can think of ways to cope up, solve problems, and feel better. Parents can build and support their confidence, resilience, optimism and identity.It is very important for parents and adolescents to be able to communicate openly and effectively with each other. Adolescents should remember one thing that after all, every parent wants the best for their child.
On 24th September 2022, Department of Home Science organized an Alumni Meet remembering all the precious alumni of the department and embracing their auspicious presence.
A good number of enthusiastic alumni were present for the occasion. Dr. Sister M. Tanisha A.C., Head, Department of Home Science welcomed the alumni and expressed gratitude for the contributions the alumni make towards the society. She also encouraged them with the words” You are the messengers and you are the message of the college towards the society”. Others present for the occasion were Prof. Ameeta Jaiswal, President, Alumni Association, Patna Women’s College, Dr. Sujata Jha, Former Head, Department of Home Science , Prof. Bandana Singh, Former Head, P.G. Department of Home Science and Dr. Punam Kumari, Head, P.G. Department of Home Science also an alumnus of the Department of Home Science, Patna Women’s College.
Few members of the alumni shared their experiences of life in Women’s College and how it has transformed their personality and urged them to make contributions towards the society. During the meet it was decided that the alumni would collaborate with the department in carrying out certain activities. The students of BA semester V and III participated in the program. The entire staff enthusiastically collaborated for the success of the event.

The Department of Home Science celebrated World First Aid Day on 10th September 2022. The students along with the teachers from the department, visited Scientific High School, Lalaji Tola, Patna, and conducted an awareness program regarding the importance of first aid.The awareness program was conducted among students to aid training and to increase awareness about the necessity of first aid in the event of any kind of injury or accident. The information was given to the school students by explanations and demonstrations wherein the students were taught to assist in a first aid emergency, along with beneficial awareness of various first aid techniques such as how to provide first aid for burns, cuts, eye injury, broken bones, and an overview of how to perform CPR. The school students took keen interest in this awareness program and found it quite informative.The program was organised under the supervison of Dr. Sister M. Tanisha A.C., Head, Department of Home Science. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Shazia Husain, Assistant Professor, Department of Home Science.
Department of Home Science, Patna Women’s College celebrated National Nutrition Month on 1st September 2022. A PowerPoint Presentation Competition was organized on the Topic: Regional Foods of India. 12 groups comprising PG and UG students of the department participated in the competition. The participants of the program highlighted the various aspects related to the origination of local foods like: climate, culture, geographic location and availability of food. The programme was organised under the supervison of Dr. Sister M. Tanisha A.C., Head, Department of Home Science. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Shazia Husain, Assistant Professor, Department of Home Science. All teachers of the department were present during the programme.

The Department of Home Science organised a Freshers’ Day Programme to welcome the students of PG and UG, Semester – I students on 31.08.2022. The programme commenced at 1: 45 PM with a prayer song followed by a welcome song sung by the students of UG Semester – I. A solo dance performance was then performed by Sana Ahmed, student of UG Semester I. This was followed by an entertaining skit performed by the students of UG Semester I. The UG Semester I students also performed a beautiful group dance. The last performance of the program was a group song by the students of PG Semester I. The programme was compered by Syeda Ayesha and Sara Iraqi, students of UG Semester I. The cultural committee members, Sister Celine Cresta and Dr. Manjula Sushila also addressed the students with their encouraging words. The performance was appreciated by everyone present there. All teachers of the department were present during the programme. The programme ended with the vote of thanks by UG student Syeda Ayesha.
Department of Home Science, Patna Women’s College organized a Cuisine Display Competition on the theme “Indian Cuisine and Culture” under “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav”. The competition was inaugurated by the Principal Dr. Sister M. Rashmi A.C., Patna Women’s College. Altogether 32 groups participated in the competition, where each group prepared popular dishes of different states of India, like “Vada Pav and Misal Pav of Maharashtra”, “Chola Kulche, Dal Makhni of Punjab”, “Litti Chokha and Maal Pua of Bihar”, “Idli- Sambhar of Kerala”. “Dum Pulav and Paneer Chaman of Jammu & Kashmir” etc.The participants were dressed traditionally to depict the culture of the state they represented.The judges for the event were Dr. Amrita Chaudhary, IQAC Coordinator, Dr. Kavita Verma, Assistant Professor Department of Physics, Dr. Sumeet Ranjan, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology.The Event Incharge was Dr. Sister M Tanisha AC, Head, Department of Home- Science and team.1st position was attained by students from the AMM Department, 2nd position was given to the students of BMC department and the third position was shared by students from Psychology and Home Science Department.The program got an overwhelming response from the students and staff.
The Department of Home Science had organised a comprehensive activity under the Breastfeeding promotion week (1-7th August 2022). The program initiatied with a teaching aid making competition which was held in the department for the Home Science students on 1st August 2022. Since the theme of the program was “Step up for Breast feeding: Educate and Support”, the teaching aids prepared by the students were used to create awareness amongst adolescent girls. On 6th August the students along with the teachers from the department visited Scientific High School, Lalaji Tola, Patna, and created awareness regarding the facts and benefits of breast feeding. The school students took keen interest in this awareness program and found it quite informative. The program was organised by Dr. Nisha Kumari, Assistant Professor, Department of Home Science.
The Department of Home Science, Patna Women’s College, celebrated National Handloom day on 4th August 2022. This event was clubbed with the Aazadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. A presentation competition was organised by the Department in order to commemorate the handloom weavers of India. Students from Semester III (U.G, P.G) and Semester V (U.G) enthusiastically participated in this program. The presentation highlighted the history, cultural significance and present scenario of the Indian Handloom Industry. Dr Sister M Tanisha A.C, Head of the Department and Dr Shazia Husian Assistant Professor ; Department of Home Science addressed the students with their words of encouragement and valuable suggestions. The coordinator of the program was Dr. Suniti Bhagat, Assistant professor, Department of Home Science.The other Faculty members of the Department: Dr Sunita Kumari, Dr Nisha Kumari and Ms Krishna Kaveri were also present for the program.
The Department of Home Science celebrated “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” on 2nd August 2022. The programme commenced at 11:00am in the department itself. The theme of the programme was “The unsung heros of freedom movement”. The programme started with the college prayer followed by a patriotic song. PowerPoint presentations on unsung heros were presented by the students. A dance performance was showcased by the students. Dr. Sister M. Tanisha A.C., Head, Department of Home Science also addressed the audience with her encouraging words. The programme concluded with the vote of thanks by Mahrukh Mumtaz, student of BA Semester V. The programme ended with the National Anthem. Maria Talat, student of BA Semester V was the anchor of the programme. The students of BA Semester V & III enthusiastically participated in the programme.
A COVID-19 vaccination camp was organised by the Health Centre, Department of Home Science, Patna Women’s College in collaboration with Central Dispensary on 1st August 2022. The camp was open for students, and staff of the college. A team of para-medical staff from the DVO (District Vaccination Office, Gardanibagh) administered the Covishield and Covaxin vaccine to 600 registered students and staff of the college. The camp was organised under the supervision of Dr. Sister M. Tanisha A.C, Head, Department of Home Science. The coordinator of the camp was Dr. Shazia Husain, Assistant Professor and In-charge of Health Centre. The faculty members of the Home Science Department Dr. Suniti Bhagat, Dr. Sunita Kumari and Dr. Nisha Kumari were also present for the camp.
A teaching Aid making competition was organised by the Department of Home Science on the occasion of World Breast Feeding Week, on 1st August 2022. The theme of the program was – Step Up for Breastfeeding: Educate and Support. U. G. Semester III, V and P. G. Semester III students enthusiastically participated in the program. The program was organised by Dr. Nisha Kumari, Assistant Professor, Department of Home Science.The faculty members Dr. Sister.M.Tanisha A. C, Dr. Shazia Husain, Dr. Suniti Bhagat and Dr. Sunita Kumari were also present for the program.The program commenced at 11:00 am in the department.
Department of Home Science organised farewell programme for MA Final year students (session 2020-2022) on 24th May 2022. The programme was hosted by MA Previous year students. The programme started with a prayer song followed by welcome dance. Few games were also there. The outgoing students shared their feelings and experiences. Dr. Sister M. Tanisha A.C., Head of Department blessed the students, showed motivational videos and distribute gifts. Teachers of Home Science Department, Dr. Shazia Husain, Dr. Sunita Kumari, Dr. Rosy Kumari and Dr. Nisha Kumari were present on the occasion. They also blessed the outgoing students and wished them very best for their future.
PG Semester II students of Departments of Geography and Home Science visited Bihar Museum on 14.05.2022. The visit to a place of tourism importance was in compliance with the syllabus of PG SEC (Skill Enhancement Course) ‘Tourism and Hospitality Management’.
International Yoga Day was celebrated by the Department of Home Science on 2nd May 2022. The theme of the program was “Yoga for well-being”. Slogan writing competition and practical yoga session was organised for the students of PG Semester IV & II and UG Semester IV & II. The program was conducted from 9:15 to 11:05 am in the department.
Earth Day was celebrated by the Department of Home Science on 22nd April 2022. The department had organised a Collage making competition on this occasion. The theme of the program was ” Joys and Sorrows of Mother Earth”. Students of P.G. Semester II, IV and U.G. Semester II participated in the program. The competition commenced at 9:15 A.M. in the department.
A speech Competition on the topic “Revisiting the contribution of women in freedom struggle” was conducted in the Department of Philosophy to celebrate Azaadi ka Amrit Mahotsav on 28.03.2022 in which students of Sem II, IV & VI participated. The students recalled the contributions of women like Bhima bai holkar, Rani Laxmibai, Sarojini Naidu, Kasturba Gandhi, Aruna Asaf Ali, Begum Safia Abdul wajid etc..in freedom struggle. The programme was conducted under the Guidance of Dr. Ameeta Jaiswal, Prof. & Head, Department of Philosophy. Ms. Tanya Banerjee & Dr. Ameeta Jaiswal were the judges Teachers of the Department Dr. Kumkum Rani, Dr. Keerti Choudhary and Ms. Shyam Priya were also present.

“Sindhutai Sapkal” was the theme of the personality class. On March 30th, classes for UG (semester II, IV, and VI) and PG (semester II & IV) students were held offline. Dr. Rosy Kumari was the program’s facilitator. The personality class was based on the life path of Sindhutai Sapkal. She is best known in India as the “Mother of Orphans,” an Indian social worker and activist who is most renowned for her work with orphaned children. That’s why she’s known as “Mai” (Mother). The video showed Sindhutai Saplak’s dedication towards orphan children throughout her life. She adopted many orphan and destitute children and because of her efforts they got a better life and good future. She also conducted a lot of work with the underprivileged groups. There is no disability bigger than poverty and deprivation. Sindhutai overcame this challenge and showed the world that even without any personal resources she could lift hundreds of young orphaned boys and girls out of poverty, homelessness and brought the light of education into their lives. Sindhutai lived to shape the lives of helpless young children.
Sindhutai Sapkal says: A mother can never be defeated. But she needs to keep her heart strong and learn to forgive.
The theme of the personality class was “Love…..till it hurts”. The classes were organised virtually for PG semester IV, UG semester VI and IV on 28th February 2022. The facilitators of the program were Dr. Suniti Bhagat, Dr. Shazia Husain and Dr. Rosy Kumari. The theme of the personality class was based on the journey of life of Mother Teresa. The video highlighted how Mother Teresa, an embodiment of love and epitome of hope, started her journey by serving the poor and the destitutes at a very young age. The video featured her initiatives, the orphanages and schools for the needy and the sick, which stand testimony to the noble work done by her. Although her journey wasn’t easy, yet she devoted her life in caring for the needy, homeless, poor and sick and taught everyone the true essence of love and compassion. Mother Teresa’s life and works continue to inspire people and will continue to inspire generations more to come.
Sehat kendra organized a small group meeting on 23.02.2022 on the topic Nutrition and its importance. Dr. Shazia Hussain, Department of Home Science explained about healthy lifestyle and nutrition in adolescent women.
Parent Teacher Meeting for P.G. and U.G. Ist Semester students was organised on 19th January 2022 by the Department of Home Science virtually.The teachers of the department Dr. Sister M. Tanisha A.C. (Head of the Department), Dr. Shazia Husain, Dr. Suniti Bhagat, Dr. Rosy Kumari, Dr. Sunita Kumari and Dr. Nisha Kumari were virtually present for the meeting.
The meeting was held in order to discuss the performance of the students with the parents. Also feedback regarding their studies, attendence and performance were discussed with the parents. The meeting commenced with welcoming the parents by Head of Department, Dr. Sister M. Tanisha A.C. The parents were briefed about the departmental profile by Dr. Shazia Husain through a presentation. Parent’s queries were addressed by the respective teachers and faculty members.The teachers and the parents also discussed about the areas in which they could improve the performance of their wards in achieving the best results.
The meeting came to an end with the conclusion that the progress of the students depended on the joint effort, mutual understanding & co-operation of parents and teachers.
P. G Department of Home Science conducted a Value education class on 15th and 16 th december 2021 for UG sem I, III, VI and PG sem I, III students. The value education class included one video which was a short story with a message of presence of God everywhere. The class was conducted by Dr. Nisha Kumari that ‘God is always there to love, listen and comfort us. In all circumstances and stages of life, wherever we may be, whether good or bad, God is there for us’.
On November 30th, Department of Home Science had organised activities under the “Jal Jeevan Hariyali Mission”. The activities were Model Making Competition from Waste Material and Poem Writing Competition. 27 students participated for both the competitions from UG and PG classes.

Value based personality class was organized by the Department of Home Science on the topic ” Personal Responsibility”. The classes were organised virtually for UG semester I, III and physically for PG semester I, III and UG semester- V, on 17th, 20th, 24th 25th and 26th respectively. The facilitator of the class was Dr. Rosy Kumari.
She discussed that personal responsibility is the willingness to accept the importance of standards that society establishes for individual behavior and to make strenuous personal efforts to live by those standards. It also means that when individuals fail to meet expected standards, they do not look around for some factor outside themselves to blame. The demise of personal responsibility occurs when individuals blame their family, their peers, their economic circumstances, or their society for their own failure to meet standards.

To bring honour to this occasion, the members of the cultural committee, Miss Manisha Prasad and Miss Enakshi Dey were invited as special guests. The program commenced with a welcome song by the BA semester I students. This was followed by a group dance performance based on the theme “Female liberation”, by MA semester I students. A melodious duet song was further sung by the BA semester I students. A thought provoking write up was narrated by MA semester I student based on “Female Emancipation”. The highlight of the event was a humorous skit with a very powerful message for the youth, performed by BA semester I students. The program concluded with an entertaining dance performance by MA semester I students. The Head of Home Science Department Dr. Sister M. Tanisha A.C. also addressed the students with her encouraging words. The event came to an end with the vote of thanks proposed by M.A Semester I student ( Nikita Sharma). The program was anchored by BA semester I students (Huzaifa and Aliya) and was well coordinated by Dr. Rosy Kumari.

Health Centre, Department of Home Science organised an awareness programme on bone health in collaboration with Patna Menopause Society and Global Orthopaedic Forum on 20th October 2021. A panel of gynecologists Dr. Nibha Mohan, Dr. Kusum Gopal Kapur & Dr. Usha Didwania spoke on menopause, symptoms, problems related to bone, their prevention and remedies. A renowned group of orthopaedicians Dr. Amulya Kumar Singh, Dr. Ramit Gunjan and Dr. Arnab Sinha discussed on musculoskeletal problems. The programme was very informative, interesting and interactive.
A camp was also organized for teaching and non-teaching staff to evaluate their bone health through Bone mineral density (BMD) test.
The program was organised under the supervision of Dr. Sister M. Tanisha A.C, Head, Department of Home Science. The coordinator of the program was Dr. Shazia Husain. The faculty members of the department Dr. Sujata Jha, Dr. Suniti Bhagat, Dr. Sunita Kumari, Dr. Rosy Kumari and Dr. Nisha Kumari were also present for the program.
A free eye check-up was organized by the Health Center, Department of Home Science, Patna Women’s College in collaboration with “Center for Sight, Kankarbagh, Patna on 30th September 2021 from 10am-3pm. The check-up was done by Dr. Akankshi Anand and her team members. 160 students, 30 teachers and 34 non-teaching staff members turned up for the check up. Eye problems like refractive index, glaucoma, near vision syndrome and cataract were diagnosed by the doctors.
Further treatment and medicines were prescribed by the doctors accordingly. The program was organised under the supervision of Dr. Sister M. Tanisha A.C, Head of Department of Home Science. The coordinator of the program was Dr. Shazia Husain. The faculty members of of the department Dr. Suniti Bhagat, Dr. Sunita Kumari, Dr. Rosy Kumari and Dr. Nisha Kumari were also present for the program.
The program was a success and got an overwhelming response from the teaching, non teaching staff and students.

Home Science student participation in the two day national webinar organized by psychology department
The teachers of P. G. Department of Home Science attended a National Webinar organised by “DDU Gorakhpur University” on “Traditional Indian Food Habits, Lifestyle and Immunity in Reference to Covid-19 Pandemic”.
A food fest was organised by the PG Department of Home Science on 28/02/2020 under the scheme of “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat”. 15 groups participated from Department of Political Science, Home Science, Philisophy, Psychology, Sociology, History, Commerce and CEMS in the food fest. Students prepared dishes of Mizoram and Tripura representing their food culture. All the dishes were prepared in the Food and Nutrition Lab of Home Science Department. This event was organised by Sister M. Tanisha AC., Head, PG Department of Home Science and in-charge was Dr. Rosy Kumari, Assistant Professor, P.G Department of Home Science. Dr. Punam Kumari, Associate Professor, MMC, Patna, Dr. Shalini, Assistant Regional Director, IGNOU, Patna and Ms. Jaya Mala, Incharge (Quality Control), Patna Dairy Project were the judges for the event. Code 06 (Priyamvada Singh – Psychology, Omni Pandey & Ishani Sinha – History) awarded first prize. Code 12 (Sneha Kumari, Rupam Sinha, Tanvi Singh – Home Science) awarded second prize. Code 1 (Anam Lakshmi, Bushra Fatma, Shreya – Home Science) and Code 08 (Tazeen Fatma, Shreya Tripathi, Palak – Psychology) shared the third prize. Dr. Sujata Jha, Dr. Shazia Husain, Dr. Suniti Bhagat and Dr. Sunita Kumari were present in the food fest.
P.G. Department of Home Science organised Parent Teacher Meet on 15/02/2020 with BA II & IV semester and MA II & IV semester in the department.
PG Department of Home Science in collaboration with Narayana Cancer Centre, Patna has organised a Health Talk on “Cancer Awareness” dated 03/02 /2020. Dr. Abhishek Anand, MD, DM, Cancer Specialist spoke on cancer, its causes and treatment. He told about foods which may cause cancer.
P.G. Department of Home Science organised a RUSA sponsored National Seminar on “Women in Contemporary India: Contexts and Possibilities” from 18-19th September 2019.
A creche for children was inaugurated in college premises on 20th September 2019.
Awareness Programme on HIV
A programme on HIV awareness was organised in the premises of Patna Women’s College by P.G Department of Home Science in collaboration with National Service Scheme (NSS). The programme focused on how HIV is transmitted from mother to child.
Dr. Avinash Kumar started the programme by highlighting how women are affected by AIDS, how one can prevent it, what precautions can be taken and what government schemes are run for preventive measures. He also said that everybody must know their HIV status by regular checkups.
Dr. Anshu asked the participant to spread awareness about free treatment under the Anti Retroviral treatment (ART) policy.
Dr. Alok Kumar encouraged students for blood donation and cleared myths related it asked student to donate blood four times in a year.
The resource person shared the AIDS helpline number 1097 with the students. They said if anybody is suffering from AIDS they can call for free treatment.
Members of Bihar State AIDS control society Dr. Abhay Prasad, Dr. Anshu, Mr. Alok Kumar, Mr. Ashish Kumar along with Head of the Department of the Home Science, Sister Tanisha A.C. and teachers Ms. Sunita Kumari, Dr. Rosy Kumari, Ms. Sujata Jha and Ms. Nisha Kumari were present.
