On July 11th, 2025, the Department of Physics, Patna Women’s College (Autonomous), Patna University, organized an Outreach Programme-cum-Educational Visit to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Patna, for the 3rd semester students.
The day began with an introductory session where officials from IMD warmly welcomed the students and offered an overview of meteorology and the crucial role IMD plays in weather monitoring and forecasting across the country. The visit began with demonstrations of key instruments, in the Observatory, used in measuring atmospheric phenomena. Students were shown the rain gauge, the anemometer and both single and double Stevenson screens.
Another fascinating device was the Campbell-Stokes Sunshine Recorder. The students also learned about radiation-measuring instruments that help monitor solar and terrestrial radiation—an essential component in understanding climate behavior and energy balance. They were shown various sophisticated equipment and advanced technology used for weather analysis and forecasting. Among them were radar systems, automatic weather stations, and other high-end instruments that aid in accurate data collection. The control room had multiple computer systems monitoring real-time weather data across different regions of Bihar. It was fascinating to witness how science and technology converge to track atmospheric conditions and make reliable weather forecasts.
This visit was an enriching learning experience, bridging classroom theories with real-world applications. It helped students understand the scientific and technical aspects of meteorology, data interpretation, and climate analysis.
Dr. Kavita Verma, Head, Department of Physics facilitated this wonderful opportunity and student-centered learning initiative. Dr. Riekshika Sanwari and Mr. Dharmendra Rai accompanied the students.
