DEBATE COMPETITION ON WORLD POPULATION DAY
On the occasion of World Population Day, the Department of History, Patna Women’s College (Autonomous), Patna University, organized a Debate Competition for the students of Semester I on 11th July 2025. The competition was based on the theme “Balancing People and Planet – Is Population Growth a Threat or an Opportunity”, aiming to engage students in a critical exploration of a
pressing global issue. World Population Day, observed every year on 11th July, is an initiative to raise awareness about population-related challenges such as overpopulation, environmental sustainability, health care, and equitable development. It also emphasizes the need to find a balance
between human progress and the health of the planet. The debate saw active participation from students, who passionately presented diverse viewpoints. Some argued that unchecked population growth leads to strain on resources, environmental degradation, and socio-economic challenges, while others emphasized that population growth can be a driving force for innovation, economic development, and global progress when managed effectively. The event created a dynamic and thoughtful atmosphere, encouraging students to enhance their research, reasoning, and communication
skills. It also provided a valuable platform to reflect on the dual nature of population growth as both a potential threat and an opportunity.
The Department of History appreciates the enthusiasm and engagement shown by the Semester I students and looks forward to organizing more such thought-provoking academic activities in the future.
