Gandhi Week Celebration (25th September – 1st October, 2024)

The Department of Political Science, Patna Women’s College, in collaboration with Jagriti (Constitutional Values and Ethics Club), celebrated Gandhi Jayanti from 25th September to 1st October 2024. The week-long inter-departmental competition commemorated the life, ideas, and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, focusing on his contributions to society, politics, and philosophy.
Day 1: 25th September 2024 Poetry Competition on “Why Gandhi Matters?” (आज के युग में गांधी की प्रासंगिकता)
The Poetry competition aimed to explore the relevance of Gandhi’s teachings in contemporary society through poetic expressions. The event was held in Room no 402 and judged by Mr Prabhat Jha, Assistant Professor, Department of English and Mr Adweetiya Sinha, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science. Students from different semesters of Political Science department participated in this competition in both Hindi and English language. The winners of the competition in English language were Shrestha Narayan and Sachhi Kumari from English department semester I and III respectively secured the first position; Khushi Raj from Political Science department semester I and Sana Jafri from English department Semester III stood second; and Sadqa Siddiqui from English department Semester V secured the third position.

Day 2: Poster Making Competition: 26th September 2024 on the theme ‘Swaraj’
The participants expressed their understanding of Swaraj, Gandhi’s vision of self-rule, through creative and artistic medium. The competition was judged by Miss Komal Kumari, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology and Miss Akanksha Rawet, Department of Political Science. Students from different departments of Patna Women’s College participated in this competition. The winners were Akanksha Kumari from Political Science Semester I and Sarika Suman from Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning department Semester I secured the first position; Arya Shri from English department Semester III and Shreya Bhushan from CEMS department Semester V secured the second position; and Anushka Harsh and Jiya Singh from Political Science semester V secured the third position.

Day 3: Debate Competition: 27th September 2024 over the topic “ Is Gandhi’s Ideas of Trusteeship still Relevant?”
The department of Political Science Patna Women’s College, in collaboration with Jagriti (Constitutional Values and Ethics Club) organized a debate competition on the topic “Is Gandhi’s Ideas of Trusteeship still Relevant?”. Students from different departments and semesters participated in the competition. The competition was held in room no 402 and students from Semester I, III, and V were the audience of the competition. The Judges were Dr. Priyanka Ranjan, Assistant Professor, Department of History and Miss. Prachi Raj, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science were the judges of the competition. The winners of the competition were Shubhangini Ranjan from Zoology department Semester 1 and Anamika Gupta from Political Science MA Semester III secured the first position. Shrithty Shikha from Zoology Semester I and Aleena Ahmad from English department Semester I secured second and third position respectively.

Day 4: Documentary Movie Screening: 28th September 2024
A documentary movie titled, ‘Pilgrim of Peace’ was screened in Carmel Hall at 11 am for students of Political Science. The documentary shed light on Gandhi’s life, struggle for India’s independence, and his enduring influence on peace and non-violence movements globally. The programme was moderated by Ayushi Arya, SEM 1, Political Science, followed by an address by the Head, Dr Vinita Priyedarshi who emphasised on the life and principles of Gandhi and his significance in modern times. The vote of thanks was proposed by Sadia Rahmat, MA SEM 1, Political Science.

Day 5: Student Exchange Program: 1st October 2024 over the topic ” The Relevance of Mahatma Gandhi in the 21st Century”

The Gandhi week Celebration concluded with an online student exchange programme between the students of Department of Political Science, Patna Women’s College, and Department of Political Science, Sophia Girl’s College, Ajmer. The students from different semesters of Political Science department from both the colleges participated and discussed their ideas over the topic ” The Relevance of Mahatma Gandhi in the 21st Century”. The event was held on Zoom platform at 5 pm and the main participants were Shambhavi from BA Sem. 5, Kyoto from BA Sem 3, and Shilpi from M. A. Sem. 1 from the department of Political Science, Patna women’s College. Avantika Nagar, Dimple Bhatia and Isha Khandelwal from MA Final year from the department of Political Science, Sophia Girl’s College, Ajmer participated. The session was moderated by Akanksha Rawet, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, Patna Women’s College.
