Department of English and Tark Debating Society, Patna Women’s College (Autonomous) observed ‘Civil Rights Day’ on the 16th of January 2024.
Civil Rights Day, or Martin Luther King Jr. Day, is an annual observance marked on the third Monday in January as it celebrates the movement that was started by Martin Luther King Jr, a man who dared to dream of a world free from the shackles of racism and inequality in the United States of America.
On this occasion, Dr Richa, Assistant Professor, Department of English at Patna College, delivered a lecture on the topic “Self Imaging: The ‘Civil’ in Civil Rights Movements in Carmel Hall, Patna Women’s College (Autonomous). She talked about the milestones and important figures related to the Black American Civil Rights movement and discussed its significance today. Instead of Re-presentation, she emphasised Self-presentation and individual narratives. She also linked Civil Rights with Feminism.
Dr Sahar Rahman, Head & Associate professor, Department of English, Patna Women’s College, all the faculty members of Department of English and Ms. Divya Gautam, Assistant Professor, Department of Mass Communication, Patna Women’s College were present along with the students of the Department of English and the members of Tark Debating Society. The programmme was coordinated by Dr Shahla Rehana, Coordinator, Tark Debating Society and Associate Professor, Department of English and Dr Prabhat Jha, Assistant Professor, Department of English, Patna Women’s College. Ms. Lowrin Azad, a student of MA Final Year, Department of English, Patna Women’s College conducted the programme.
