Poetry workshop

Department of English, in collaboration with Poesis, the Poetry Club, organized a Poetry workshop in Carmel Hall, Patna Women’s College, on 3rd January 2025. The workshop was conducted by Prof. Jaydeep Sarangi, Principal and Professor of English, New Alipore College, Kolkata, on the topic “Endless Crow Noises: New Markers of (Indian)English Poetry”.
Dr. Sahar Rahman, Head of the Department of English, welcomed the resource person.
Prof. Sarangi started his talk by tracing the history of Indian English writing to Deen Mohammad and Abdullah – writers who hailed from Patna. He further traced the history of Indian English Poetry to the contemporary times and described the present poetry scene in India as a ‘visible and vibrant phase’. Prof. Sarangi encouraged budding poets from Patna to write and publish their poetry.
Dr. Sarangi also released his new poetry collection, The Half Confession, and the reprint of Poems of Chandalini, poems by Kalyani Thakur Charal translated by Jaydeep Sarangi and Zinia Mitra.
The Poetry workshop was followed by a poetry reading session by students of the Department of English, Patna Women’s College. Sanvi, Sharanya, Stuti, and Medha recited the poems of Basudhara Roy, Lakshmi Kannan, Jaydeep Sarangi and Sukrita Paul Kumar respectively.Sharanya read a self-composed poem.
A poster competition was also organised on select Indian English poets. In this competition, students of the Department of English prepared posters of two major poets, Jayant Mahapatra and Keki N. Daruwala. Prof. Jaydeep Sarangi judged the posters and awarded the winners. The winners were Sanskriti, Aparajita, Shrishti, Manya and Palak from B.A. Semester 4.
Dr. Deepika Tiwari, Assistant Professor, Department of English and Coordinator of Poesis, Poetry Club, Patna Women’s College, coordinated the event along with Dr. Prabhat Jha, Assistant Professor, Department of English.
Dr Tauseef Hasan, Head, Department of C.E.M.S , Dr. Shahla Rehana, Associate Professor, Dr Devina Krishna, Assistant Professor of English; Dr Nikhila Narayanan, Assistant Professor of English; Dr Sister Nelsa A.C, Assistant Professor, Department of English, and Ms Runa, Assistant Professor, Department of C.E.M.S. attended the event.
Swati, a student in the M.A Final Year, moderated the session, and Harshita delivered the vote of thanks. Rajshree and Shagun, as volunteers, helped organise the event.
