The Department of Biotechnology, Patna Women’s College conducted the Debate competition on the topic “pros and cons of scientific advancement” on 9th March 2024 at 11:00 am in Room No. 4.11(Science Block). The event aimed to foster critical thinking and promote dialogue on the ethical, social, and scientific dimensions of scientific advancements. The debate competition provided a platform for participants to critically evaluate the multifaceted impacts of scientific advancements in biotechnology. While acknowledging its transformative potential in healthcare, agriculture, and sustainability, the discussions underscored the importance of ethical frameworks, environmental stewardship, social equity, and biosecurity measures in guiding responsible innovation and ensuring the equitable distribution of benefits. The program was hosted by Dr. Vivek Raj. All the faculties of the department namely Dr. Arti Kumari (Head of the Department), Dr. Alok Ranjan, Dr. Vivek Raj, Dr. Premlata Kumari, (Assistant professor, Department of Biotechnology), and the students of 2nd semester were present during the debate. Dr. Pinky Prasad (Head department of Botany) and Miss Moon (Head department of Statistics) were invited as judges of this event. The judges commended the participants for their well-researched arguments, articulate presentation skills, and engagement in constructive discourse. They emphasized the importance of considering diverse perspectives, weighing trade-offs, and approaching biotechnological advancements with a balanced perspective that prioritizes ethical considerations, environmental stewardship, and social justice. Overall, the debate competition served as a valuable forum for intellectual exchange and critical reflection on the role of biotechnology in shaping the future of society. The vote of thanks was given by Dr. Vivek Raj.
