International Mother Language Day

As part of the celebration of International Mother Language Day, Department of English, Patna Women’s College organised the screening of ‘Dreaming of Words’, a National Award Winning documentary on 15th February, 2024, under the ‘Projections: Celluloid World’ series. The screening started at 12:00 noon, in Mother Veronica Excellence Centre, Patna Women’s College. The theme for the year 2024 is- ‘Multilingual Education is a Pillar of International Learning’.
The film documents the inspiring story of Njattyela Sreedharan, a 4th school standard drop-out from Kerala, who after 25 years of extensive research, compiled a multilingual dictionary, that offers a comparative study of 4 major Dravidian languages – Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada. ‘Dreaming of Words’ traces Sreedharan’s life, works, experiences, efforts, and struggles in getting his dream dictionary published.
The screening of the film was followed by an interactive and engaging question-answer session with Mr. Nandan, the Director and Producer of the documentary, who also shared his experiences and thoughts on the making of the film. Dr Sahar Rahman, Head of Department, Department of English, Patna Women’s College, shared her insights on the topic and emphasized the importance of multilingualism in a multicultural society.
The event was organised under the supervision of Dr Devina Krishna, Assistant Professor, Department of English, Patna Women’s College, and was moderated by Sharanya Singh, a student of U.G. semester IV, Department of English. The ‘Vote of Thanks’ was proposed by Pihu, a student of U.G. semester IV, Department of English, thus concluding the stimulating session..
