The second session, held on May 17, 2023, focused on the topic “Idea of Freedom after Independence.” Dr. Amita Kumari, an Assistant Professor from the Department of History at Sido Kanhu Murmu University in Damka, Jharkhand, served as the resource person for the session. The beneficiaries of this session were students from Semester IV in the departments of History, Political Science, and Sociology. The session was also live-streamed on the official YouTube channel of Patna Women’s College. The program commenced with a prayer song, followed by the lecture delivered by Dr. Amita. She delved into the concept of Azaadi (freedom) and its evolving meaning from the pre-independence era to contemporary India. Dr. Amita also highlighted the limitations of freedom for Dalits and women, citing the perspectives of renowned social scientists such as Kamla Bhasin, Annabhau Sathe, and Gopal Garu. She discussed their diverse ideas on freedom and further explained the distinction between political freedom and socio-economic freedom, emphasizing the dominance of political freedom in the hierarchy of freedoms. Following the lecture, a question and answer session took place, moderated by Shreya Sharma, a student from the Department of History. The vote of thanks was proposed by Mariyum Fatima, a student from the Department of History.
