    • The department aims at creating a learning environment that is conducive to the development of critical faculty – the ability to think critically and independently – and making of socially responsible and committed students who have imbibed human values and are ethical in their practices.
    • The department focusses not only on imparting curriculum based theoretical knowledge but also on sensitising students towards important issues and subjects, so that the acquired learning can translate into positive social intervention.
    • The activities of the department aim at providing learning opportunities and exposure to the students. The regular activities include poetry writing and recitation, Skit based on literary texts, research project and poster making. Apart from this the department holds varied activities to promote student participation and performance.
    • Guest lectures, seminars, interactive sessions on relevant themes are also organised.
    • Movies / documentaries are screened and film appreciation classes organised.
    • Teachers of the Department provide constant guidance – both academic and personal – to the students. Each teacher acts as a mentor to a group of students. Students share their academic and personal problems and the mentor provides counselling to the students.

Department of English conducted a Poster Making Competition on 13.03.2023 on the theme ‘Women and Glass Ceiling’ as part of the International Women’s Day celebrations Ojaswini 2.0.
Both undergraduate and post graduate students participated in the competition in groups. The Posters were judged by Dr. Divya, Assistant Professor, Department of BMC and Sister Nelsa, Assistant Professor from the Department of English. All the groups displayed their ideas creatively through painting, pictures and quotes. Their attempt was lauded by the judges and teachers of the department.

PG Departments of English Patna Women’s College (Autonomous), Patna, Bihar and Jayaraj Annapackiam College for Women (Autonomous), Periyakulam, Tamil Nadu organized a National Level Online Intercollegiate Competition on the theme “75 Glorious years of independent India: Towards a Victorious Future” from 10th February to 11th February 2023. This collaborative initiative between the two institutions brought together more than 60 colleges from all over the nation to participate in different competitions. It provided a platform to students from across the country to showcase their talents and interact with one another. Ten different competitions with themes related to the history of Indian independence and the vision of an inclusive and syncretic India were organised. 342 students from 66 colleges across streams participated online in these competitions through Google meet. The poetry/prose competition was re-invented in form of ‘Rework the framework’, the photography skills were checked through ‘Vision for Mission’ while the art of sketching was evaluated through the representation of Indian life in ‘Draft your Art’. Other competitions were Discuss and Tell, Ponder and Present, Static Souls, Shout out Loud, Go Solo and Astounding Anecdotes.
The result of the two-day event was announced during the valedictory session on 11th February 2023. Patna Women’s College stood at the top with an overall 90 points while St Ann’s College for Women, Hyderabad secured the second spot with 76 points. Some of the participants shared their learning experiences during the session.
Dr. Devina Krishna of Patna Women’s College proposed the vote of thanks. The coordinators from Patna Women’s College Dr. Devina Krishna and Ms. Nikhila Narayanan were applauded by the head of the department Dr. Sahar Rahman for coordinating the event so well. Winners and participants were congratulated and encouraged to participate in such competitions in future as well.

Department of English organised a ‘Special Interactive Session’

On January 31, 2023, Department of English, Patna Women’s College (Autonomous) organised a ‘Special Interactive Session’ with Mr Adam Levi, a research student in the University of Sydney, Australia who delivered a talk on the topic “Wordhood and Methods of Language Description”. It was followed by an interactive session in which students participated enthusiastically. It was an engaging and enlightening session for students. Pragya Priyadarshini of BA sem 6 moderated the session. Lowrin Azad of MA sem 2 summed up the talk. Vote of thanks was proposed by Shrija Raj of MA. The session was coordinated by Dr Devina Krishna, Assistant Professor, Department of English, Patna Women’s College.

Department of English organised a speech competition on the occasion of Republic Day on the topic Right to Equality in Indian Constitution: A Vision for Inclusive India on
25 /1/23 at 9:15 a.m. The students of B.A sem 2 and M.A sem 2 took part in the contest .The students through their speech highlighted the different provisions in the Indian Constitution aimed at building an inclusive society. Lowrin and Sharanya bagged the first position in MA and BA categories respectively. Dr Sahar Rahman, Ms Nikhila Narayanan and Dr Deepika Tiwari were the judges for the competition. Dr Sahar Rahman addressed the students and gave them feedback on their performance as well as tips to improve their speaking skills.

On 16th January, 2023, department of English, Patna Women’s College celebrated Civil Rights Day. Civil Rights Day, or Martin Luther King Jr. Day, is an annual observance marked on the third Monday in January. It celebrates the movement started by Martin Luther King Jr. to end racism and inequality in the United States. Students of BA SEM 2 (Core)and SEM 4 ( GE) were shown a video of Martin Luther King’s speech ‘I have a dream’ which was followed by a discussion on the history of Civil Rights Movement and an interactive session on the significance of civil rights in shaping a more inclusive world.
The programme was conducted by Ms Apurba Paul, Assistant Professor, Department of English.

Department  of English organised a poetry competition ‘I WRITE, I RECITE’ on the  theme, “The change I want” on the 8th September 2022, in Mother Veronica Hall, Patna Women’s  College. This is a regular activity of the department of English aimed to train its budding poets. The theme of the competition emphasised on the importance and role of poetry in bringing a change. Students of both UG and PG across semesters presented their vision of the change that they wish to see around them.
Fifteen students recited their self-composed poems in this competition. The poems took up sensitive issues like gender discrimination, equal rights, casteism, social reforms, mental health, hardwork and peace.
The Head of the Department, Dr. Sahar Rahman congratulated the participating students and encouraged the aspiring poets to nurture their craft. Before the results were announced, one of the judges Dr. Richa discussed the merits and demerits of the recited poems and gave important tips on the techniques of poetry writing.
The event concluded with poetry recitation by both the judges- Dr. Richa, Assistant  Professor and Dr. Prabhat Jha, Assistant Professor, Department of English. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Shahla Rehana, Associate Professor, department of English and Ms. Apurba Paul, Assistant Professor, department of English. Students of the department conducted the event.

Freshers’ Fiesta

On August 31,2022, Department of English, Patna Women’s College organised ``Freshers’ Fiesta`` to welcome the students of UG and PG semester I.The cultural programme presented on the occasion was creatively curated combining music, dance and poetry.Special guests of the event were Dr Celine Crasta A.C., Head, Department of History and Cultural coordinator, Patna Women's College and Dr Jaya Philip, Assistant professor, Department of Microbiology, Patna Women’s College. They appreciated the performance of the students on the occasion.Dr Sahar Rahman, Head, Department of English congratulated the students for their participation and enthused them to be actively involved in all the activities of the department in future as well. Dr Devina Krishna and Dr Deepika Tiwari, Assistant professors, Department of English, Patna Women's College were the co-ordinators of the event. Department of English, Patna Women’s College organised an alumni meet on 24th September, 2022 in Carmel Hall. The theme of this programme was “CARNIVALESQUE”. This event marked the reunion of the former students of the department of English. Around 70 alumnae from batches as old as 1966, 1974 to the recently passed out students from 2021 batch attended this meet and revived the memories of their college days.The meet began with the welcome speech by the Head of the Department, Dr. Sahar Rahman who presented a brief summary of the achievements of the department in the last few years. Dr. Shahla Rehana, Associate Professor in the department and also an alumna shared her experiences. Keeping with the theme of carnivalesque, a skit was presented by Dr. Richa and Dr. Prabhat Jha, Assistant Professors, Department of English. This was followed by a beautiful dance performance by Manvi and Richa, both students of BA semester III, Department of English. The event was loaded with games and other fun filled activities which were conducted by Dr. Devina Krishna, Dr Deepika Tiwari and Ms. Apurba Paul, faculty members of the department of English. Dr. Prabhat Jha provided technical support to the programme. Eminent alumnae like Dr Muniba Sami, Ms Kanak Saran, Ms Shubra Roy, Prof. Smriti Singh, Dr Sweta Singh, Dr Shubham Shree shared their experiences of their college days. Dr Ameeta Jaiswal, incharge of the alumni affairs of the college also addressed the gathering and briefed them about the activities of the Alumni Association of Patna Women’s College.
The students of the department of English displayed models of different literary ages, depicting the major events in the respective ages. The Alumni meet was sponsored by Reliable group, India Book Centre, The Gifting Santa and Barista.

On 1st September, 2022, Department of English, Patna Women's College, organised the inaugural show of 'Projections: Celluloid World'. The film 'Harry Potter and Philosopher's Stone' was shown to the students of BA Sem 5 and Sem 3. Inter- Department Extempore Speech Competition

On 18th August, 2022, Department of English, Patna Women’s College, organised an Inter- Department Extempore Speech Competition. There were 22 participants from various departments of the college. The participants had to pick up a topic from the chits on the spot and had 2 minutes to speak on it. The judges of the competition were Dr Seema Prasad, Associate Professor, Department of English, A.N College and Dr Miranda Das, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, Patna Women’ s College. The competition ended with the judges giving their valuable feedback and the declaration of results by Dr Sahar Rahman, Associate Professor and Head, Department of English, Patna Women’s College.

Department of English,Patna Women’s College organised the ninth lecture of “Reflections Lecture Series” on 16th August, 2022. This online lecture was a part of departmental activities aimed to provide the students and teachers a platform to interact with academicians and intellectuals from different spheres.

The topic of the lecture was “Diverse Voices, Diverse Themes: Poetry Anthologies in English in India”. The guest speaker was Prof. Ranu Uniyal , Professor and Former Head , Department of English and Modern European Languages, Lucknow University. She shared her insights on the poetry anthologies from the pre- independence era of to the contemporary times. She discussed in great detail the diversity in themes and voices and the role of the editor in anthologies. The rise of poetry anthologies post-pandemic was dealt with in greater detail.
Dr Bindu Amat, HoD of English, Providence Women’s College, Calicut and Dr. Muniba Sami, Former Associate Professor, Department of English, Patna University also gave their valuable inputs.
The programme was hosted by Dr Devina Krishna, Assistant Professor, Department of English, Patna Women’s College. The question-answer session was taken up by Ms Apurba Paul, Assistant Professor, Department of English, Patna Women’s College. The moderator of the event was Ms Astha, a student of MA English 3rd Semester, Patna Women’s College. The lecture was summed up by Ms Nancy, a student of BA English Semester 5, Patna Women’s College. The vote of thanks was proposed by Ms Tanya, a student of BA English Semester 5, Patna Women’s College.The faculty members and students of the department of English attended the lecture.

Department of English, Patna Women’s College, organised the eighth lecture of the Reflections Lecture Series on 28th May, 2022. The speaker was Dr Basudhara Roy, Assistant Professor, Department of English, Karim City College, Jamshedpur. The topic of the lecture was ‘Speaking to Each Other: Exploring a Tradition of Indian Women’s Poetry in English’ The event was organised through the virtual platform Zoom. The event was successfully conducted by the students of MA English Sem II. Aastha moderated the session, Madiha summed up the lecture and Shambhavi proposed the vote of thanks.
The speaker traced the tradition of women’s writing in Indian English literature. Dr Roy gave an account of the visibility and invisibility of women’s voices and the politics of their inclusion. She also gave a detailed account of feminist epistemology.
The lecture was followed by an interactive session. It was a highly informative, thought provoking and enriching session.

Department of English, Patna Women’s College celebrated ‘Azaadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ on 24 May 2022 to celebrate 75 years of India’s Independence.
Students of BA 2nd semester gave a Power-point presentation on the topic ‘Azaadi: Women’s Voices Matter’ in which they traced women poets and writers from 1947 to the present time. More than 25 Indian women writers were introduced. The timeline was divided into four sections of 15 years each. The programme was co-ordinated by Dr Richa, Assistant Professor, Dept. of English, and Ms. Deepika Tiwari, Assistant Professor, Dept. of English. Dr Sahar Rahman, Head, Dept. of English appreciated the presentations and gave suggestions for further improvement.

Slogan Writing Competition

To mark the Earth Day 2022, the Department of English, Patna Women’s College (Autonomous), organized a Slogan Writing Competition on the theme INVEST IN OUR PLANET. The students of BA Semester II participated in the event. They were divided into 12 groups and they presented the slogan, written on a chart sheet along with relevant pictures and paintings, depicting the significance of the day and the meaning of their slogan. Sister Nelsa AC, organized the event. Dr. Devina Krishnan and Ms. Apurba Paul were the jury members for the competition. Dr. Sahar Rahman, Head, Department of English, shared her views on the occasion and announced the results. The moderator was Ms. Agna Elizabeth and Ms. Sejal proposed the Vote of Thanks.

The speaker was Dr Amritendu Ghosal, Assistant Professor, Department of English, Anugrah Memorial College, Gaya. Department of English, Patna Women’s College organised parents teachers meet on zoom platform for students of BA 3rd semester on 29.01.2022 from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM.
Dr Sahar Rahman, Head, Department of English presented a PPT deliberating on the mission, vision and core values of the college. She also discussed the role and responsibilities of parents and students i making learning effective and meaningful.
It was followed by an interactive session between parents and teachers. Parents shared their feedback about the teaching of the department and were inquisitive to know about the classroom performance of their wards. It was an engaging and fruitful interaction.

Department of English, Patna Women’s College organised a virtual Speech Competition on 27th January, 2022 at 2 p.m to commemmorate the 73rd Republic Day.
The topic of the competition was “Democracy enhances the dignity of citizens”. The competition was judged by Mr. Amitabh Ranjan, Guest Faculty, Department of CEMS, Patna Women’s College.
There were 17 participants who were given 3 mins each to deliver their speech.
After the speeches were delivered Mr.Amitabh Ranjan discussed the elements of a good speech. The results were declared by Dr Sahar Rahman, Head, Department of English.
The competition was co-ordinated by Ms Apurba Paul, Assistant Professor, Department of English. All the teachers of the department attended the event.

On December 8, Department of English, Patna Women’s College organised the fifth lecture of “Reflections Lecture Series” which started as a monthly feature of departmental activity to interact with academicians and intellectuals from different spheres.
The topic of the lecture was “Research Possibilities in Memory Studies”. The guest speaker of this lecture was “Dr. Avishek Parui.”- Assistant Professor, IIT Madras, associate Fellow, UK Higher Education Academy, Founding chairperson, INMS. The distinguished speaker spoke at length on the understanding of Memory studies as a concept in an academic field, eventually delving into the exploration of research opportunities. The lecture was equally graced with the presence of Prof. Sidhi Verma, Prof. Shankar Dutt, and Dr. Muniba Sami. The attending audience consisted of faculty members and the students of the Department of English. The lecture was too informative and insightful and further light was shed upon the topic with an exploratory question-answer session. The vote of thanks was presented by Ms. Deepika Tiwari, Assistant Professor, Dept. of English, thus ending the event on the note of gratitude.

On November 27, Department of English, Patna Women’s College organised the fourth lecture of “Reflections Lecture Series” which started as a monthly feature of departmental activity to interact with academicians and intellectuals from different spheres.
The topic of the lecture was “Capitalism and India’s Socio-Economic Structure”. The guest speaker of this lecture was ” Dr.Chirashree Das Gupta”- Associate Professor, Centre for the study of Law and Governance, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. The lecture was attended by the faculty members and the students of the Department of English and by the faculty members and students from the Department of Economics as well. The lecture was too informative and insightful and got concluded with an exploratory question-answer session.

The Department of English, Patna Women’s College organised Fresher’s Day for the new batches of U.G (2021-2024) and P.G( 2021-2023) on 30th October 2021. The guests for the event were the Vice-Principal of the college, Sister M. Tanisha A.C. and Sister M. Stuti A.C. The programme started with watering of plant by the guests. A fusion of Bharatnatyam and Kathak was performed on ‘Ganesh Vandana’ by Manvi and Ipsha. It was followed by sharing of experiences of being a fresher by a student of B.A sem 1, Sakshi. A solo song was performed by Anjali followed by a skit enacted by the students of M.A. I. The skit was based on Hamlet. It presented the 21st Century Ophelia who was shown as an empowered woman who becomes the ruler of Denmark. A group song was performed by the students on the song ‘Badal pe paon hai’. Archana, a student of M.A. I shared her experiences of her undergraduate days at Patna Women’s College. A dance was performed by the students on the song ‘O gujariya’. It was followed by the song ‘O ri chiraiya’ sung by Ipsha. The next performance was by Anjali who sang the song ‘Hasi’. The last performance was Kata, a preset sequence form of karate, which was performed by Jyoti from M.A. I. She performed it on the song ‘Shiv tandav strotam’. Both the guests and the head of the department shared their views about the programme. They lauded the performances of the students and motivated them to actively participate in co-curricular activities. The event concluded with the vote of thanks which was proposed by Anam. The event was anchored by Saaleha, Sanjeevani, Shristi and Tanya. The teachers in charge Ms Apurba Paul and Ms Deepika Tiwari were applauded for their constant guidance and supervision.

The Department of English, Patna Women’s College (autonomous) organised a Parents-Teachers meeting (online) for the students of semester V on October 29, 2021 at 1:30 pm. It was attended by sixty-five participants altogether.

The meeting started with Dr.Sahar Rahman, Associate Professor, Head of the Department of English, Patna Women’s College welcoming the parents. It was followed by a powerpoint presentation which gave an insight into the mission, vision and core values of the college. The college anthem was played and then a virtual tour of the department of English was conducted.
The teachers of the department introduced themselves and shared their feedback on the overall performance of the students of Semester V . It was followed by feedback and suggestions from the parents.
The meeting concluded with expression of gratitude both by teachers and parents.

Department of English, Patna Women’s College organised the Annual Poetry Competition ‘I Write, I Recite’ on 25th October, 2021 in the Carmel Hall at 11 a.m.
The theme of the poetry competition for this year was ‘Fear’. The judges were Ms. Priyanka Pandey of Navodaya School, Sheohar and Dr Shahla Rehana, Associate Professor and Former Head, Dept. of English, Patna Women’s College. Ms Priyanka Pandey is a poet and alumnae of the department.
Total 23 students participated from both the UG and PG streams.

Department of English organized an online Parent-Teachers Meet on 21st September 2021, for the students of first semester of both BA and MA programmes. The students and their parents got an opportunity to connect with the members of the faculty. The agenda of the meet was to acquaint the parents with the vision, the mission and the core values of the college. The teachers discussed the role of parents in the growth of their wards and the expectations from students. The session concluded with feedback from the parents.

On 20th September, 2021, Department of English, Patna Women’s College, conducted the second lecture of the monthly Reflections Lecture Series. The speaker was Prof. Jaydeep Sarangi, Principal and Prof of English, New Alipore College, Calcutta University, Kolkata. The topic of the lecture was ‘English Poetry in India: Texts, Contexts and Global Popularity’. The talk was organised on the virtual platform of Zoom.
The lecture was followed by an interactive session. It was an informative and engrossing session.

21st August, 2021: On the eve of Raksha Bandhan, the fifth semester students of the Department of English, Patna Women’s College participated in an eco-friendly rakhi making and display competition on the online platform of zoom at 4 PM. There were twelve entries by students who displayed their rakhis along with a write up on the materials used and the message it conveyed. The event was judged by the former Head of the Department (English) Dr Shahla Rehana. The programme began with Dr Rehana deliberating on the importance of our bond with Nature and how these Rakhis can give a strong message of restoring the broken bond between the modern man and Nature. She exhorted the students to do their bit, in small ways like making compost from kitchen waste, saving water and electricity from wastage.
All entries were beautifully creative and loud and clear in their message.

On August 14, 2021, the Department of English, Patna Women’s College, organised a virtual event on Zoom to celebrate 75 years of Indian Independence. The theme of the event was “The Voice for Freedom”.
The event had performances like group songs, dance performances, monologues, poem recitation, paintings and speech based on the theme.
It also had a “Jaago Zara” tribute dedicated to Indian women achievers from all the fields of life. All these performances celebrated and questioned the real sense of freedom for women in India.
At the end, the teachers of the department shared their views about Independence with the students. The programme ended with the song “Saare Jahan se Accha.”

On August 6, 2021, Department of English, Patna Women’s College organised the first session of “Reflections Lecture Series” which started as a monthly feature of departmental activity to interact with academicians and intellectuals from different spheres.
The topic of the lecture was
“Indian History Criticism: History, Texts and Ideas”.
The guest speaker of the lecture was Professor Dhananjay Singh, Chairperson of the Centre for English Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
